The biggest story in the UK over the last week or two has been the leaking and subsequent publication of the expenses claims of our "Honourable" Members of Parliament. Some wonderfully amusing claims on the public purse have been made (from MPs of all parties) from the criminally fradulent through to the routinely grasping, up to the amusingly trivial.

Highlights include:

- Repeatedly "flipping" which house of theirs they claim as their second home, thus entitling them to free extra expenses allowances on upkeep of the "new" second home.
- Claiming mortgage relief on properties that don't have mortgages
- Claiming more for council tax than actually paid out
- £8k plasma screen TVs
- Dredging moats
- Mole control
- Helipad maintenance
- Piano tuning
- Trouser presses
- Lightbulbs
- Hanging baskets & flowers

(more details here, if you're interested. Personally I love the way the different claims reveal loads about the nature of the parties - leaving aside the criminal cases, the other Labour claims are pettily bourgeois, while the Tory ones tend to be more haughtily patrician ;))

There's a lot of public anger over this, most of which I rather think is simple envy at not being able to claim this sort of stuff themselves in their own jobs. A very few members of the public interviewed occasionally grin & admit a grudging admiration for the sheer daring of some of these claims.

It made me wonder... what's the most outrageous thing YOU'VE ever claimed (or tried to claim) on your expenses? And more importantly did you get away with it?

If you don't have an expenses facility, feel free to tell us about most outrageous freebie you got off your employer/university/insider trader/mafia contact/etc!

Plus, there's an anonymous poll, for you to tell us if you've ever "massaged" your expenses claims.

Or you can just join in the laughter about the MPs claims..

For me, the MPs have inspired me to see if the accountant agrees that the "shareholders annual meeting" for a small business I run with a friend can be done in the Caribbean & the associated costs met by the company.

Nope, never claimed anything dodgy. In fact, I don't claim all I'm entitled to, even now (and less so when I worked for the church). On average I must sub the NHS a couple of hundred a year in religious resouces, plus more in unclaimed miles.

I get the odd corporate lunch, and they kindly fund me 48 hours retreat each year. The best lunch in the county is at the Eden project.

I don't really claim much apart from study leave funds. In fact, apart from the occasional free lunch here and there, plus a dinner night out at the expense of a cardiology rep which was certainly eye-opening :guffaw: the only bit of purchase we get are drug rep goodies, mostly pens.

Some notable bounties: In university I once scored a whole boxful of disposable laser pointers and a mousemat (with gel wrist rest :D) from a Zyprexa rep meeting that was just lying around, unclaimed by anyone once the meeting had finished, which was nice. Also, I managed to obtain some leftovers from a drug lunchtime meeting during a night shift in my first year of work (mini-Kievs FTW :bolian:) which helped. And of course the 1Gb pen drive a while back. :D

i blagged four GI Joe figures for £1 each from work. they were supposed to be £5.99 back in 1993 when they were brand new. this was in about '03/'04. tehy were MOC aside from some fading. i probably could've flogged em for £10 on ebay, but i opened em for my collection!

other than that, i don't get expenses working in a newsagents...

Once i was on days and we needed to start up a afters and nights shift so the firm brought me fish and chips with peas for coving the afters shift i think it came to £3.95.
I only lived across the road so i could have just have nipped home for a bite to eat.

Well, I've been on per-diem for over a month.

But I don't get the full amount, since it's long-term. And I haven't been claiming it on days that I'm at home (some weekends). (I also had to find an apartment... they wouldn't go for putting me in a hotel for the whole time).

Still, my boss keeps asking me if I'm claiming everything I'm entitled to.

My job isn't that suited to leeching off free stuff.. not high enough on the importance/power chain.

Though i imagine i could fudge my work time now because i'm on assignment in a foreign country and mail my HR office my work hours each day while they just put in my full work time automatically.

I have to punch in my time there but i don't know if they double check them with my home base so in theory i could leave early and have a nice afternoon.

Otherwise i haven't done much in the same vein as those MPs and it boggles my mind that they believe it to be ok and that no one would find out. It's the same as with superstars having affairs and then act all surprised when it ends up on worldwide news.

I once had to file an expense report that contained an $800+ bar bill (just beer and mixed drinks) for one hour for ten people. That raised a few eyebrows and resulted in a new corporate policy regarding the "entertainment" of customers.

We had a damned good time though! :D

I'll bet!

Now that I think about, when I was working for Hydro, we got a flat rate for lunches whenever we were on the road, regardless of whatever you bought. So if you only a meal that was 5 bucks, you got to keep the whole 12 dollars (I think it was).

So naturally, me and the other summer students would arrange our inspection trips so that we could have lunch first. ;)

The boss strongly suggested that we stop doing that though. So we responded by visiting a few places before, having lunch, and then resuming the inspections after.

You see, this is what I'm talking about. Excellent (ab)use of the system. :techman:

I charged a hotel bar tab to my employer once. It actually worked!

But that's it...

I did this when I got snowed in after work once. Billed the hotel room, multi-course meal and bar bill to my employer at the time. I was actually pretty surprised they paid.

Mind you, I wasn't drinking myself since technically I was still on call (didn't get any more calls though, and couldn't have gone out anyway), but I did buy a few drinks for other guests at the hotel. All of us were stranded employees of various companies that ended up taking refuge at the same hotel when the snow came (I actually snagged the last room, which was very lucky!). It was quite a festive mood since we were all billing our employers!

Not only did I manage to get my work to pay for all my international wine courses, I got them to pay for me to go to Birmingham, stay in a nice hotel and eat in a nice restaurant. All because the exam sitting that was closest to me was on the same weekend as Reading festival, which I wanted to go to. HAH.

Ooh, what wine courses? Are you working towards your MW?

(I'm merely an enthusiastic amateur tippler, though the idea of studying it formally one day is very tempting!)

I'm working on my BSc in wine production at the moment. To get on the course I needed my WSETs, which is what the company paid for! Saved me about £500!

It's an awesome course. Insanely science-based, which is awesome. Microbiology is wonderful <3

Sonds great! I've looked at the WSET courses previously; they look pretty thorough. One day, if I have the time, I'd love to do them.

Yikes, too many med school microbiology flashbacks for me to ever define it as awesome. Mind you, if we'd ever studied Botrytis cinerea, I might have enjoyed it more.

I've not managed to put too much on expenses - at least compared with our loyal MPs, but on a trip to Seattle I put a baseball game on expenses and a night drinking with a friend. On a trip to Cork I managed a hotel room for a friend and a few pints. Just before I left my job I put a meal out and cocktails for a couple of friends on expenses.

It was good times, though I don't work there anymore. Not for a reason related to that.
