Star Trek - $43M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $148M - Global at $218 M

IMAX still has it through the 20th I think... So no Thursday IMAX showing, let along F-Su. Too bad, I think it still could've generated very good income, if not actually competed with TS and NatM.

Next Trek should be filmed in IMAX. Push the envelope further... especially since it made more money there than any film before it.

Though that might change soon, it hopefully is a portent of things to come.

Just been on Box Office Mojo. The overall box office is good, but the film's only made 25% of its total global gross outside of the US which is very poor. It might yet improve, but to even reach Trek's historical average of around 36% is going to take some doing now after a week and half of release.

Still has not opened in Japan nor Mexico.

Yeah...Wednesday is the last day on the calendar at our IMAX; that would be the originally-stated two weeks.

Kind of begs the question as to how much Trek stands to make in either country; Japan I see as pulling more in, Mexico not so much.

BTW Showbizdata's numbers show Trek beat Angels & Demons on Sunday by about $500,000. Good stuff.

Yancy

So it seems that Trek held up and grew its attendance over the weekend, while A&D dropped...that does not bode well for A&D going into Memorial Day weekend. I bet Trek can hold on to a solid 3rd after T-4 and Night at the Museum while A&D drops to 4th. I really think that Night at the Museum will top out ahead of T-4 with schools out on Memorial Day.

Trek will be 3rd easy. I am thinking around 30-32 million for the 4 day,

That would be nice. It would put Trek very near $200 million domestic at the end of the holiday. It would be fantastic if it could cross the line on or before Memorial Day, though.

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

the motion picture is the only movie in the franchise dealing with logic and "big ideas"...and suffered big time as a result

Yeah, it suffered all the way to the box office. In 1979, it grossed $82 million domestically which is $241 million today. :guffaw:

TMP benefited from "absence makes the heart grow fonder" as well.

As did Star Trek, to be fair.

Not only that, but it also benefited from very little real competition. According to Box Office Mojo, it was the #1 movie it's first three weeks of release in December 1979.

Looking at the top movies of 1980, TMP really had no significant "blockbuster" competitor until March with Coal Miner's Daughter, which did very well, but wasn't really the same audience.

The next big genre/action films was Empire Strikes Back, in May.

So TMP pretty much had the action/adventure/SF crowd to itself all winter long, and part of the early spring.
