Star Trek on the ISS

Found this, thought it was neat:

Many moviegoers likely will have to sit in crowded theaters to watch the new "Star Trek" movie, but not NASA astronaut Michael Barratt. He got the opportunity to watch the film aboard the International Space Station while he and two crewmates fly 220 miles above Earth. The only thing missing was the popcorn.

The film's production company, Paramount Pictures, transferred "Star Trek" to NASA's Mission Control in Houston, which then uplinked the film to the space station. Barratt watched the film Friday on a laptop computer inside the Unity module.

I wonder how long it took to upload from Houston, what kinda bandwidth do they get between the ISS and Earth?

The thing that I don't understand is that it took several hours for NASA engineers to compress the film - haven't they heard of Super©? -OR did they just want to watch it themselves a couple of times first?? :p

Forget Star Trek - they had the Eurovision Song Contest live from the ISS tonight! :wtf:

They should've just sent this to some filesharing groups.. 2 hours later (or even faster) and they would have gotten a perfect XVid copy of 700MB or 1,4 GB

When people can have decent internet speeds using a cellphone surely the Nasa can send some 1,4 GB of data up to the ISS.

My guess is they spent the whole time coming up with a scheme to reposition Titan so that noone would point out that Saturn's rings are positioned wrong. That way they wouldn't have to deal with potential nitpickers on the ISS.

Next up: Inventing warp drive.

So we can assume that every single person at NASA has a bootleg copy of the movie taken directly from the official Paramount source?

I think thats great. Not just that it's possible, but that they took the time to send it into space. Excellent
