How did Kirk know they were Romulans?

When Kirk realizes they're about to run into Nero's ship, he mentions Romulans. How'd he know?

I'm sure the Academy covered something about the Romulan Empire, when he saw them he took an educated guess.

Because Uhura had picked up a Klingon transmission the day before mentioning a single huge Romulan ship taking down like 45 Klingon ships, then when he heard about the sensor reading coming back from Vulcan and the fact it was the same reading on the day the Kelvin was destroyed (by a single huge ship) he put two and two together.

Pretty much straight forward common sense really, you don't even have to be Sherlock.

Because Kirk read Pike's dissertation about the Kelvin incident. That's where his info come from.

more then likely every officer wrote a after action report. Pike just did a dissertation about all of them.

Remember that Balance of Power was the first official time starfleet officers had seen a Romulan on a viewscreen. Previous communications were audio only. Nero didn't give a crap and sent a visual communication. I'm sure during the after-action debriefings, the obvious questions about Romulan ears were asked and the question was settled well before Kirk grew up.

I agree, the Kelvin bridge crew that survived more than likey reported that Romulans looked precisely the same as Vulcans thanks to Neros view screen appearance.

and who's to say that part of the abandon ship procedure included a device that included backup sensor and communication much like when kirk had uhura release that drone, I forget what episode.

At the very beginning of the movie, we hear live communications between Starfleet and the Kelvin. If Starfleet got all the intel live and the witness accounts from survivors, then they probably pointed the finger at the Romulans. Since the Romulans of the time knew nothing about Nero, they had to diplomatically defend against the accusations. This would've necessitated diplomacy between the Feds and the Romulans years before TOS. So if for example, the Romulan Star Empire was shown the Kelvin's transmission of Ayel's face, they would confirm that he was indeed a Romulan, but insist he was not acting for the empire. However, face to face diplomacy is now in place and Uhura learns Reman and the other two Romulan dialects, etc.

I know of no Star Trek episode titled Balance of Power. Please use the correct title Balance of Terror next time.

(sirens blaring) Citizen, please state the correct name. The December 15, 1966 episode of Star Trek is correctly identified as Balance of Terror.
