Far Cry 2

I enjoyed playing the game through, but it did have some serious problems with the respawning enemies and the constant driving (no issue with save points, because I played it on the PC, where it has quicksave). I was able to forgive most of this and play to the end because I thought the African setting was really well done and a lot of the firefights were pretty intense.

However, I think it feels like a game that badly needs a sequel, because it does some things so well, but the errors are almost unforgiveable. A decent sequel that corrects all the problems (and most would be fairly easy to correct) could be an absolutely amazing game.

I hate this game. It seemed like a great idea and when I first got it I loved wandering the map, sneaking up on people, getting in a fire fight now and then etc.

However, as it went on it really started to suck. The freaking checkpoints that respawn really piss me off. On top of that it seems pretty much everyone in the game hates you. I'm driving along a road minding my own business. Another car comes in the other direction. Not a patrol just a normal car with one guy inside. Next thing I know the guy turns around and chases me! I have to get out and kill him! Nobody likes me! (sob).

I hate getting a mission and then having to drive across the map. Getting to and from my objective is a bigger chore then the actual mission. I would not mind the driving if I just didn't constantly have to fight a million people while doing it. The combat just isn't as enjoyable as it could be. The weapons are great though.

I love open world games but not openworld where everyone is angry at you from the first minute. I'd rather play GTA or Fallout 3.

Sounds like most of the complaints here are along the lines of the fact that a game whose key selling point was its open-world nature is in fact open-world.

I think it was poorly done.

IMO Zelda Orcarnia of Time was kind of open worldish and that was well done. This was like playing a video game of walking.

My favorite open world game is without a doubt Crackdown on 360. It is just sheer fun and there is nothing tedious about it all. And your abilities naturally level up just from doing anything. And the city looks gorgeous. You run around the rooftops collecting green orbs slowly increasing your speed and jumping height till you're a frickin' superman. And the only thing you have to do is kill kingpins, there's no bull side missions you have to do. There's races but I ignored them. It was just so much fun!

.

Yeah, I remember as the game went on that I got to know the individual checkpoints really well. I would begin to plan my routes around checkpoints that I knew I could race through without clearing properly, and things like that... very odd game design.

I love the game (have it for Xbox360). Unfortunately, the darn game froze at a certain point, and the saves are corrupted. This is apparently a very common problem, and Ubisoft has yet to release a patch fixing it. I don't really like the multiplayer that much, so if they don't release a fix soon, I'm just going to take it to Gamestop and trade it in toward something else. My patience is wearing thin.
The fix actually came out 2 days ago.

Ah, good. Thanks for letting me know. :techman:

I'm finding the best way to travel is to drive down the train tracks. It's open, it's straight, and there's no enemies. You may not be driving straight to your target but you'll save time in useless fighting, enemy checkpoints, and winding jungle roads you can't see where you're going on. I'm basically teleporting with the bus station then driving down the train track which the bus is always touching, it works pretty well.

How do you get the cameo net? I'm doing the weapons dealers missions but I checked the Gamespot game guide and it never lists a cameo net with the weapons dealers missions.

Hey, so... apparently my game is permanently glitched. I just initiated the "kill faction leader" mission at the end of Act 1. And I can't save anymore. I go to save, and it just says "saving" forever and it doesn't save. I've tried going into earlier saved files and trying it then, and it still doesn't work. I've tried it about ten times now. I think my game is broken. Is this the glitch others were talking about? Is there anything I can DO about this? And I don't have cable internet connection or X-Box Live so I can't download any patches. Sigh.

I tried getting into this game. I really wanted to like it. I just couldnt get into it in the end though. I guess these open ended games just arent for me

I dunno - as open-ended games go, this one was pretty annoying.

Far Cry 2 was about as open ended as a jail cell.

Yeah, good point, "open-ended" is the wrong term. "Open world" maybe? The story was mostly linear but you could go where you liked at any time... although there wasn't all that much incentive, except for Gun Shop missions and stuff.

Either way, when a game lets me go where I want to go I tend to either get lost or get killed because I go to the wrong place  Its too much frustration for me so I usually put them aside.

Are you up to 27%?
I read if you were going to get the glitch, you would get it by then.
Luckily I haven't.

I hated the game a first too. Big Time.
I gave it another chance, somewhat figured out the mechanics and am having a better go of it.

I tell ya I bought the I.E.D's from the gun shop and (literally) been having a blast with them.
The make taking out the convoy missions and the Jeep patrols a breeze.
Just throw one in the road hide and wait for a sucker to come by and BLAM!!
No more jeep patrol harassment.

Holy shit I think I *AM* at 27%!!! Well oh well, no more Far Cry for me. Sigh. I was finally starting to enjoy it and understand it. What a ****ing crock to send out the game that way! I don't have XBox Live and I'm on dial-up internet so I can't download this stupid patch to fix it! Thank god I got it on clearance for $10.

Hell yes, same here. I trued the first game but I just ended up wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out where I was supposed to go and what I was supposed to be doing. It drove me nuts, and made me realize if I was on a tropical island with a bunch of mecs gunning for me while I tried to save my girlfriend I would be absolutely screwed. :scream:
