Alternate Reality - Another Theory

So here's what I believe-

I believe that this is an alternate reality. I do not believe that the 'Prime' universe co-exists or whatever. I believe that original trek lives as does everything that happened on screen before this movie.

I look at it from original Spocks perspective- He served with pike, then with kirk, he fought his captain (Amok Time) he encountered v'ger, he died, was reborn swam with some whales, tried to unify vulcan and romulus, tried to save romulus from extinction and got sucked back in time. All this happened from his perspective, which is our perspective, therefore it happened.

The word alternate comes from alter obviously. Nero is the cause of the alterations. It is only discussed by the characters as being 'alternate' because they have become aware of what happened. OF COURSE ITS AN ALTERNATE REALITY because what happened due to Nero arriving in the past never should have happened.

Star Trek has ALWAYS treated time travel as linear. You go back, you change things, you come back to the present things have been changed for good or for worse they are changed. I don't remember Data in First Contact saying Captain - it is not neccessary to follow the borg into the past, we can just stay here - they will dissapear and alter some other reality, ours will be fine the borg will simply dissapear. EEhh No.

Now you might expect me to complain about the violations done by this new Trek but I'm not. I'd be much happier to think the rules always used still apply. As I said before Older Spock is my frame of reference for everything that i've seen on screen before and through that link I see how all old trek is preserved..

I'd rather keep the idea of cause and effect within time travel rules and wish that Orci and Kurtzman had the BALLS to do the same, instead of trying to get us to swallow this 'Prime still exists horseshit'

So this is an alternate reality because reality has been altered. So I don't mind what they have done I just wish they'd call it like it is. Anyway we had to have some major changes. I don't think i'd be too worried about scottys life being in danger, cos I know he's gonna spend 80 years stuck in a transporter so i know hell be fine or who would care about kirk in a life and deat situation when we all know he comes to a (pathetic) end on Veridian 3.

Of course there are plenty other theories out there which could explain things but would give as many headaches. Anyway my 2 cents.

Anyone else buy this? Anyone else OK with the theory that the past has been changed but they are ok with that?

I think it's another quantum universe as explained in "Parallels". Then you can have BOTH exist at the same time. That's the theory I'm sticking with because it's the one I like. And it doesn't give me headaches.

Both "Parallels" and "Mirror, Mirror" support the existence of multiple timelines.

So if, you like, look at it this way: there exist two types of time travel, trunk and branch (I'm not married to those names, it's just convenient.) In trunk time travel, the traveler remains in a single timeline, changes propagate backwards from the point of change (via temporal wakes, as seen in FC and VOY.) In branching time travel, the traveler actually leaps to a parallel with each change, going down another branch.

Of course, it's also possible that in some cases, the characters may have mistaken branch for trunk, or vice versa. But to somebody stuck in the past trying to get home, the difference is academic - either way, if you want to return to the future you knew (or close to what you knew), you have to set things on the path that existed before the time-altering event.

Pretty much what I said but you explained it much better. Thanks.
