Star Trek - $5.61 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million Worldwide

Re: Star Trek - $5.63 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million Worlw

anything above 40 million this weekend would be amazing though am thinking 35ish. Against T-4 week after ain't that memorial weekend so most of movies will get a bump off that ?
Just be glad T4 didn't open THIS weekend.

Oh, Memorial weekend is the week after T4.

Why, I really doubt T4 is going to do that well. A worn out franchise that's trying to reboot itself by going the dark-Transformers rout.

You think this movie will have a 55% drop? Its not really tracking like that at this point (Similiar movies with similiar week day drops)

Yeh because so many people have already seen it early I think we will drop like that but then afterwards I think it will hold steady very steady.

Re: Star Trek - $5.63 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million Worlw

The second weekend will be interesting. Iron Man dropped 48% against only marginal competition (Speed Racer/What Happens in Vegas). Star Trek has competition that will take some of its older audiences away.

I have a feeling Trek will drop more than Iron Man, but less than 55%.

Last I saw a week ago, T4 was tracking in the 110 million range for its 5-day opening.

Nope, Memorial Day is the 25th.

Crap you're right. My bad!

If Wolverine opened big, there's no reason to think that T4 won't.

I think that's a little high, especially as the film just started pre-sales, and there's no indication of sellouts yet. That's just some wild guesses from analysts who have been very wrong in the past (can you say Speed Racer).

I wonder, since Trek seemed to skew a little older on the opening weekend, if this is the weekend that the younger audience will turn out? All of them that wanted to see Wolverine have done so, and I would wager that most under 25s aren't that hyped about a Ron Howard/Tom Hanks movie with Catholic priests and stuff...the younger viewers that might not have gone last weekend will have heard the good word of mouth and might give it a shot after all. Most of these teens will go to the movies regardless of what is playing just for something to do. And perhaps Trek will be their primary option considering the other choices right now.

This weekend is the last of the IMAX shows, right? Maybe that will contribute to keeping the drop down.

Re: Star Trek - $5.63 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million Worlw

Got to tell the truth here and confess to being a bit disappointed that the figures for Thursday weren't higher.

I'm just hoping there's pent-up demand for the weekend by those people who haven't seen it yet, are being drawn to it by word of mouth, and plain old cash-spending die-hard fans, the more aged ones for IMAX.

I myself might head to the City this Sunday with my son to see it in that format.

The folks I saw it with on Friday are going back to see it on Saturday. None of them Trekkies.

Re: Star Trek - $5.63 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million Worlw

How much will this film need to make before it starts realizing a profit? I'm told that the rule of thumb is twice the cost to make it -- at $150 million, that would mean $300 million before a profit is realized. Anybody have information on the actual profits of the previous Star Trek films, adjusted for inflation today? The real measure of success, at least financially, will be if Star Trek outperforms the most successful previous Star Trek film in this way. I think it will, but I have a sense not to the level that suggests it's as big a crossover to "mainstream fans" as had been hoped.

Re: Star Trek - $5.63 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million Worlw

Generally speaking, we're not given hard numbers. But $300 million worldwide is a good estimate for the break-even point for the studio.

You wanted a Thursday increase on the 7th day of release? Iron Man and even the Dark Knight had larger drops.

Considering my son's reaction to the fact that there were no actual angels and demons in A&D, I think you might have a point. I think if Terminator were this weekend though, it would've been bad for Star Trek.
