Certainly would have been less... eventful. A Graduation ceremony and the foibles of Kirk's disciplinary hearing.
Riveting.
I liked it, as it was an iconic "Spock states odds and Kirk ignores them" moment cribbed from TOS, but I do agree it seemed to come a bit early in the relationship.
OTOH, it's also in that moment that Spock asks Kirk to carry a message to Uhura, and he's heard McCoy call him Jim, so maybe he's just being vulnerable and reaching out for a friend in a tough moment. Remember, he didn't expect to succeed or survive.

I had zero problems with it. And frankly it seemed pretty realistic to me.
They were in a tense situation, and had just worked their way through a major gun fight in which Kirk had saved Spock's life. They were faced with the ultimate no-win scenario and were executing a plan which by Spock's own estimation only had a 4% chance of success.
This was likely going to be the last time they were going to see each other, why not break the ice and lower the defenses a little and be a little less formal?

Isn't it obvious? It was a complete sign of contempt and total disrespect, like when Nero addressed Pike as Christopher. And it's really uncalled for, he was the acting Captain of the Federation flagship for God's sake; He didn't go to three weeks of Starfleet Academy to be called Jim.
They could have, I don't know, done something else with the plot?

I don't know that it bugged me per se, but it definitely jumped out at me at the time. I thought it was a little odd, a little too quick.
I see the problems but the needs of the movie outweigh the needs of the etiquette. Next movie has to start with Kirk and Spock friends and Kirk captain. Cannot spend 5 movies getting there.
That's how I'm going to choose to see this.
Because I'll admit, when I first saw this movie, I found "Jim" to be a bit early. I expected it to come at the end, or maybe for Spock to refer to him as Kirk and then have the "Call me Jim" thing, but yeah. We get it a bit early instead.
But I like that idea that Spock is wanting to be friendly and hears McCoy (a clear friend) calling him Jim and so goes with that. Makes it make sense to me.
