Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I don't know if I'm alone in this view but my main beef with this alternate universe or whatever other bullshit name you want to call it is the idea of rehashing characters that got their own TV show and six movies. The propensity to remake old TV shows and movies is a vile plague on Hollywood and creative endeavors in general.

Rather than come up with fresh ideas, producers are content to rehash the Dukes of Hazzard in movie form, make Step it Up sequels and the most insidious recycling of all... remaking classic movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still or The Seven Samurai. As a movie buff I am already incensed by the practice. Seeing it happen to a franchise I have thoroughly enjoyed is especially disappointing.

Translated, we in the Netherlands call people like that "antfuckers". But I don't know if that's appropriate. :D

Funny 'cause it's fly fuckers over here!

BTW, the "prime" timeline is not erased! Old Spock remembers things that unfloded there. It's just another timeline that happens concomitantly.

Then burn your copy of the Magnificent Seven cause it was a Rehash of The Seven Samurai Also.

Btw humanity has been thinking and creating for thousands,,,, THOUSANDS of years now. There are only so many Ideas that can be thought up and expressed ofver all those Millenia.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

THE ORIGINAL UNIVERSE HAS NOT BEEN ERASED. IT SIMPLY TAKES PLACE IN A DIFFERENT TIMELINE.

Christ, why is that so *fucking* hard for people to understand?!

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I was in another timeline called the sixties and seventies where I experienced a show called Star Trek. Then I found myself forward in time thirty years but in Trek close to a century had passed. Still further along in my primetimeline I was at the turn of the century and Trek was back two centuries!

I'm never gonna see the sixties and seventies again. Relativisticly, I'll never see my future the same way either.

Why should Trek be any different?
Sorry to break the news to you, but life is life and Trek is Trek. That is why Trek could be and is different.

What are you breaking to me?

I didn't want to see a "More Trouble with Tribbles" styled STXI; I wanted to see a movie that made me feel good about the stories and mythos of my youth continuing on well after I'm gone.
I got what I wanted in spades!
I didn't want to see Trek go the way of Shakespeare had the public insisted on only the original cast.

I don't like the idea of recasting but it would be pretty cool if Star Trek had Shakespeare's staying power. People still perform those 400 year old plays.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

If I actually thought the Prime was erased, I'd be pissed. But there's really no reason to feel that way.

Because they think they know how time travel and alternate realities are really supposed to work. Nobody nowhere knows what really happens so this entire argument is pointless.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

Fans don't get upset. Fans are pleased for their franchise. Purists get upset.

Total nonsense. There is no such thing as "purists" except in your head.

There are no groups of people who like or believe the same thing. Every single person who likes Star Trek does so on a different level and likes different aspects.

Just because some people disagree with you on certain parts of the film it does not mean they belong in a group that you must pejoratively label. You are not on this board just because of one film, but because it has a history behind it.

There is nothing wrong with fans feeling uneasy that the Star Trek they grew up is closed to them in the future, and that parts of Trek that they loved has gone. At the very least, even those who diagree with this should understand it as fellow Trek fans.

Lastly, isn't your labeling others, and attacking them for criticising a film, a sort of FANatacism more worrying in real-life than those lost in fictional timelines?

It was a joke, so please don't take it too seriously.

Still, for me it's hard to believe people can actually get upset over a show. Feeling uneasy while watching it is completely normal, if you don't like what you see. Just as feeling elated over it if you do like what you see. Nobody remains unaffected, it's a show (or in this case, a movie); it plays to your emotions. But it's still a show. It doesn't destroy anything that has already been made and nobody forces anyone to watch it either. It's really that hard for me to understand; when the movie is finished, it's finished, right? So how come, for some people, those feelings still persist when they're done watching?

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I was half expect to receive a frantic phone call as I was in the theater that described a situation in which a number of dvds from the shelf where slowly disappearing like Marty in Back to the Future. Then I remembered it was all just entertainment.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I don't like how a non-Trek fan was given the power to destroy the Trek timeline that we've had for the last 40 years.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

The Prime timeline isn't erased, and this thread isn't going well -- too much being taken too personally. Jayson, I think you'd better try another topic. Closing.
