Remember the Continuum's civil war from the voyager episode "The Q and the Grey" where Q wanted to mate with Janeway? It noted that supernovae are the result of Qs's weapons. Romulus may have been destroyed by stray bullet of that war... collateral damage...

If we consider Countdown to be canon (whatever that means these days), then Spock knew this was coming for quite some time, merely by observing the star -- not by observing external stellar phenomena along the "bullet's" path.

Excellent theory though. Really had me thinking.
