I liked this McCoy

not enough is being said for the other characters in the movie. But i loved this guy. The line about his wife taking the entire planet after their divorce was a VERY big crowd moment. He nailed McCoy, and made him very modern.

The look on his face when things are going good, or bad, emotes a lot. And that is hard to do. Will be fun in future movies to see him and Spock banter about...will be fun indeed...

Couldn't agree more! And Bones was the character I was worried about the most. I was so "Oh no on can top DeForrest!"

Luckily, he didn't have to. He was just Bones, not DeForrest... :)

Loved Urban. He's found a new fan with me... :techman:

There was a huge applause over in Communist Portland, too. I think it's 'cuz after McCoy talks about how his wife got the entire planet, he says something like "all she left is the/my bones." (Thus his nickname.)

I agree. Dr. McCoy was my least favorite from TOS and is my new favorite for the nuTOS. Urban did a sensational Bones and I understand why Nimoy thought DeForrest would be happy with how the character was portrayed.

And I liked how Bones and Kirk were really shown as good friends though the Academy, since even in TOS it seemed like Kirk went to Bones when he had some more personal issue, but Spock when it was more weighty, kinda like Bones was his drinkin' buddy and Spock was his work buddy... at least in TOS.

Urban did a great job...I had no idea who he was before this movie. But DeForest will forever be #1 McCoy...but this guy did a great job...he was also a big Trek fan himself (TOS)....

I've become a fan of Urban, too, now. The only other movie I'd seen him in was LOTR, which wasn't too impressive.

Urban outdoes DeForest, which is all good.

Yep, Urban was fantastic. I think ALL the new actors/actresses were great. Excellent casting all around.

I agree, they were all marvellous bringing their take to these characters took a lot of gutsy decisions (in the best traditions of starfleet, even) with throughly involved trekkers looking on. They took me on and showed me something new about something i thought i'd lost. I can't thank them enough for that.

Also i dont' know if anyone has said it, but the child actors were also amazing. Young Spock and his 'friends', young Kirk: they were really engaging and well professional i thought. If they are involved in flashbacks or whatever in future presentations (a bit like that old favourite kung fu) that would be cool too.

But Urban was amazing, he really brought the warm and grounded character to life with a moving homage to his fellow professional's input to the character. He was a joy and anticipation in every scene, and he sure had some memorable lines. That definition of space was pure McCoy.

I agree, those kids were great; especially young Spock. I thought Urban was brilliant as McCoy. Out of all the new cast I've heard that he (and Pegg too) was actually a Trekkie. :)

Yes. I like this McCoy! He's exciting!!

(I've got a feeling that paraphrasing this line is going to be overused - probably by me, if by no one else  - for quite some time to come....)

I initially thought casting a New Zealand actor with little physical resemblance to Kelley was a bad idea.

But Urban rocked as McCoy. I wouldn't say better or worse than Kelley, but he nailed it.

He really did rock that role. It's a shame he virtually disappeared for the second half of the movie, but I hope we'll see more of him next time. He made a great entrance and stole the show every time he was on screen.

Urban just nailed the character.

i too would have liked more McCoy. i hope in the next movie we get a Spock/McCoy debate about something.

Wow..I love this thread. Everyone is spot on...not being a big LOTR fan, who was he in that movie? Great thread folks...keep it up...

Not me. I thought the way Urban's McCoy parted his hair on the right was disrespectful of Kelley's McCoy who parted his hair on the left! I had a very hard time believing it was the same character.

I kid. Urban was awesome. Embodied the character perfectly in my opinion.
