This Is Not Your Father's Star Trek?

Oh don't bother... I believe it's called "hero-worship" and personal experiences nor verifiable arguments work against such a thing. :D

Maybe I'm being obtuse but, what?!?
I wasn't remarking about your post, but that of the one you both quoted.

People assign certain attributes -- like viewpoints and such -- to a hero when in "hero-worship-mode". Then, they go on to say "my hero wouldn't have liked that!" or "This is not in style with my hero's worldview!" And over time, these attributes become larger and larger, until the image of the hero is larger-then-life.

There are enough sources that cite Gene Roddenberry as a simple man, who wanted to make enough money. Like many other people. Nowadays, it seems like he was the new Jesus; all for a wonderful bright new world and such, more progressive and visionary then any other human has been since.

Most of Star Trek's vision didn't came from Roddenberry, but from it's executive crew, writers and all other people who have contributed. A TV series isn't made by one person, you know.

Huh. Let's see ... Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, et. al. Unexplored galaxies and the sense that anything can now happen. No restrictions drawn by years of continuity bloat. The unknown. Excitement. Sense of wonder. No holodecks, Dominion, Cardassians, Borg, Q or catsuits.

What do you know ... this is your father's Star Trek.

Right. I agree that Gene Coon and others probably had a lot to do with the Star Trek vision. Yet Roddenberry has been dubbed the Great Bird of the Galaxy. He did come up with concept however, you have to give him that.

Yes, on that we can agree.

But I do believe that if Roddenberry wouldn't have come up with the concept, surely somebody else would have.

Not to mention being LAUNCHED OUT outta the enterprise after an altercation? What happened to "take him to the brig?"

The brig doesn't arrive til Tuesday. ;)

Ooops, wrong movie (and timeline).

yes if i were to dare to psychoanalyse possibly one of the greatest minds in star trek history, i'd say Spock was overcompensating and reverting to a basic binary logic mode reasoning that since the ship cannot withstand anymore of Kirk's shennanigans, he had to be removed from the equation altogether. QED

This is my father's favorite Trek movie. He grew up during TOS era, and was probably watched the re-runs of TOS cause my mom was a massive Trekkie, he's seen all the movies, all the other series as well, and he thinks this is the best one since atleast the Voyage Home. So, not your father's Trek is probably inaccurate in my instance. Plus he's a big comic book buff, so I'm sure he's used to reboots due to that, probably why this reboot never really bothered him that much.
