Loved it. A formal greeting would jsut sound like the same old stilted Trek dialogue we've heard a thousand times. It surprised me, and made me chuckle.

I thought it sounded like "Hi Christopher, I'm Nero... Welcome to the weekly AA meeting."

It initially seemed out of place with what the rest of Trek had done in the past, in that usually encounters taking place would be so serious and formal.

But I liked it because it felt more real. For instance, if I was an evil renegade, I wouldn't care what I said or what anyone else, least of all my enemy, thought of me. I would say whatever I felt like saying.

Hell, if I was a Captain of a Starship, I would most likely begin the majority of my greetings like that, especially if I don't answer to the person to whom I'm addressing.

I did. Totally loved it. Look at my sig.

It was hilarious, unlike anything we've had before. No melodrama "I am destined to wreak havoc, mwahaha", no maniacal laughter. Superb. Very cool.

I figured this line and the way it was delivered was indicative of Nero's Blue-Collar mining background and that he was not accustomed to having discussions in a formal manner.

Its the usual convention to talk with respect, calling them Captain etc...

This guy is just an honest, hard working romulan miner, why should he fein respect to someone he intends to torture.

If he had said Hello Captain, its too polite for the situation.

    I LOVED THIS LINE.

    It was funny.

It really showed Nero was a normal dude.. a miner... and not the usual Trek villian.

    It fit perfectly.

He wasn't a military man. He wasn't on a military vessel. He had no military training. He was just a pissed-off miner who's had over twenty-five years to stew. To him it was more of a casual phone call than an attempt to open talks with an enemy vessel... and that's exactly how it came across.

I liked it. It was like a sinister Facebook greeting.

I like the phone call analogy. It makes a load of sense if you see it that way.

It made the man so real, so consistent.

That's exactly what is sounded like!

I laughed. His delivery was not like the same old wooden delivery you come to expect when mortal enemies meet for the first time over the viewing screen.

Nope, totally destroyed any potential sense of menace or threat Nero might have had. I actually found myself thinking it must be a gag-reel clip that somehow accidentally got spliced into the movie...

I mean, I like the idea that he's a blue-collar guy who just wants to talk man to man with no pretension, but his tone of voice is too sarcastically bright and chirpy for that.

Makes him interesting and different. Not all people who're about to fry your arse have to be self-absorbed, pompous, monologue uttering teh evulz. He was a man who has nothing to lose and absolutely no respect for military protocol.
