This is great. I think a sequel is definitley on the cards and hopefully a new TV series.
Here's a cool little fact:
That's the second-best opening of 2009 (after X-Men Origins: Wolverine's $85.1 mil last weekend), and it includes a whopping $8.2 mil earned in IMAX showings, a new one-weekend record for the large format (beating The Dark Knight's $6.3 mil).
The foreign launch of "Star Trek" beamed up a solid rather than spectacular $35.5 million at over 5,000 playdates in 54 markets, winning in 23 territories in its opening weekend.
You know what I hate? The fricking spyware that they use in their ads. I clicked on that link and my avast! antivirus software immediately sounded its red alert klaxon because Variety was using the 728x90 banner ad which downloads a GZIP payload. Not cool.A little OT: I hate hate hate how Variety writes their articles, those ridiculous abbreviations: aud. rev. sesh. soph. Jeeeeesus.
$76.5 million is the domestic tally. Its international tally is $35.5 million, for a worldwide total of $112 million.Does any know how well the movie has done internationally?
Is the $76.5 million just domestically, or does that the TOTAL so far?

Very disappointing...
Aside from repeat viewings, very few people will watch this film for the first time after the first week of release. I imagine the box office figures in the US will drop off a cliff come next weekend, so this week is very important.
They keep harping on the under 25 demographic--well, this figure brought to up by the 34-?? bracket. Older folks with the extra dough to plop down. Taking kids with them if possible.
Oh yeah, and mothers. Take the mothers. What better way to say Happy Mother's Day than Star Trek at IMAX?
