$76.5 million

They keep harping on the under 25 demographic--well, this figure brought to up by the 34-?? bracket. Older folks with the extra dough to plop down. Taking kids with them if possible.

Oh yeah, and mothers. Take the mothers. What better way to say Happy Mother's Day than Star Trek at IMAX?

:D

Excellent box office results. This was inconceivable just a couple of years ago.

The first 2 Trek movies broke the all time weekend record when they opened but a lot has changed in the movie industry since then and these are great numbers.

Almost $80 million the first weekend? A twelfth movie is a sure bet now. In just three days the Abrams movie made what GENERATIONS did in...what? Several months?

The foreign launch of "Star Trek" beamed up a solid rather than spectacular $35.5 million at over 5,000 playdates in 54 markets, winning in 23 territories in its opening weekend.

Variety.

Very disappointing...

A little OT: I hate hate hate how Variety writes their articles, those ridiculous abbreviations: aud. rev. sesh. soph. Jeeeeesus.
You know what I hate? The fricking spyware that they use in their ads. I clicked on that link and my avast! antivirus software immediately sounded its red alert klaxon because Variety was using the 728x90 banner ad which downloads a GZIP payload. Not cool.

Bear in mind that Star Trek opened in 54 markets. Wolverine is currently playing in 102 markets.

Star Trek has made $112 million worldwide in its opening weekend. That's what Star Trek: Insurrection made in worldwide box office in its entire run (although that's without adjusting for inflation).

Does any know how well the movie has done internationally?
Is the $76.5 million just domestically, or does that the TOTAL so far?

Don't hold your breath waiting for a new Trek TV series. Paramount's last TV Trek was a failure, while it's newest movie is a huge hit. They're gonna go with what works best, movies, and DVD/blu-ray releases.

And anyway, the last thing I want is yet another uninspired "spinoff" about yet another ship, yet another crew. No one cares, Paramount.

Foreign box office is following the same pattern as the domestic one, making more money in one weekend than some previous Trek movie did in their entire run.

Not really. That sort of figure is very good for the first weekend. If non-US gross hits $40-45m, the film will have done exceptionally well, and far better than any other Trek film. Following historic trends, a $45m non-US gross would give a worldwide gross of around $140m.

Aside from repeat viewings, very few people will watch this film for the first time after the first week of release. I imagine the box office figures in the US will drop off a cliff come next weekend, so this week is very important.

Umm, why? It should get excellent word of mouth, and the reviews are stunning.

I took my Mom, Dad, Grandpa, and two aunts, and everyone seemed to have a great time. Now I just get to sit back and slow smoke bbq ribs until dinner is ready for everyone l8r....

That and the new 22" samsung flatscreen for Mom's Mac should hopefully make up for me not getting flowers this year.
