Why do the ST XI Romulans look different?

Sorry if this was already asked, I couldn't find anything about it.
Why do the Romulans look different? Kinda reminds me on TOS Klingons.

Thanks.

Remember that we've only ever seen military Romulans, these are simple mining folk, there might be an answer within that.

Ah yeah, forgot about that. Perhaps these are just the Romulans from the TOS era (I know their from the future, but I think I read somewhere that JJ wanted to make a race closer to the TOS era than the TNG/VOY era).

They shaved their heads, and stuck on tribal tatoos that have some meaning as a form of mourning after Romulus was destroyed.

The appearance of many Trek species - including Romulans - has changed over the years. They didn't have the V-shaped forehead ridges until TNG, and I think that was only done as a way to distinguish them from Vulcans more easily on-screen. But since the two species are related, I don't have a problem with the way they were depicted in ST'09.

Those ridge heads were idiotic in first place. No species will develop RIDGES on their FOREHEAD in 1500/2000 years. And please no more mutagen theories. It was good for klingons to have bumps so they didn't look so human and it was dumb to ridge up romulans who were supposed to look vulcan!

Really. Good riddance to the ridges.

Although having all of them bald rather sucked. :p

I always thought that some of them got their ridges from breeding with klinglons. Either that or they're a cosmetic enhancement like breast implants. Either would explain why they suddenly have them after one century.

Because the Romulans in TNG were dressed up to look nasty. IT was a stupid move and was lazy. It should have never happened. Abrams fixed that mistake.

Um, maybe there are just different races of Romulans like there are different races of Humans.

That's not really true. Abrams said that he didn't like the TNG look and was going to take it back.

Moreover, we had plenty of TNG episodes featuring Romulans and no limpy heads.

Abrams fixed an obvious mistake.

Some of the Roms looked to me like they had slight bumps on their brow - their foreheads didn't seem totally smooth. Did anyone else get that?

Or there are just different races with different features

Not likely.

Again, Abrams said that he was taking them back to the original look.

If they were different races, then why didn't we see the smooth heads in Enterprise's Romulans, then no lumpy heads in TOS, then only lumpy heads in TNG & DS9. So, do they revolve races in power with the turn of the centuries?

To say that they are different races requires proof and substantiation.

Abrams statements are all the proof needed: he didn't like the look, he got rid of it. Good for him.

We also saw an example in TNG of a Romulan woman who looked Vulcan and had lived as one for years. After getting back with her people, no effort was made to "restore" any ridges. Since we know from TOS the Romulans never had ridges and in Nemesis we also see what the Remans look like, there are any number of explanations possible for the ridged 24th century Romulans.

The simple fact, tho', is that in both the prequel comic and in the movie itself, we see Romulans from Spock's senior years do NOT have ridges (at least some of them), this sugggests that the normal look of Rommies is smooth-headed.

You know, they DID disappear from galactic involvement for DECADES prior to the tail end of TNG season one, and when we first see them, they look different. Again, there's no telling what happened, but we certainly know now that the smooth Rommies are canon and possibly the rule, rather than the exception.

All who disagree will be be sent to the planet Excalbia to star in a reality show.

Bring your own anti-perspirant.

Then what about the lumpy headed Romulans in Enterprise? How do they fit in.
