New stardates

Re: Did you like the new Stardate system?

I don't understand why they aren't using the system from TOS or ENT.

Because those systems don't really mean anything to anyone who isn't totally devoted. I'm mental for Trek and even I don't really understand Stardates.

They needed to establish a timeline for Joe Theatergoer and this worked well. Yeah, it violates canon but who really cares?

Re: Did you like the new Stardate system?

The only thing that bugged me, and this was just on a level of sounding dumb, was that the first stardate we heard from Robou was soooo consecutive. 2233.4 whatever.I like jumbled numbers because they sound more natural and less "fake" if I'm getting my meaning across. Like stardate 1234.5 would be retarded, but stardate 1352.4 would be fine.

Yeah, I know, we have dates that do the same thing, like 09/10/11, but those stand out as being odd.

I also hate alliterave names like Bruce Banner and Peter Parker, but there ya go.

This is in no way a big deal for me, it just took me out of thew movie for a second. Cuz I notice stupid shit like that.

It did have the virtue of being the actual date though.

:wtf: Kay? I'm happy they scrapped the whole ''stardate 5252.98.67.'' CRAP! I think the new system makes more sense.

I care. I think that if they are going to violate canon at all, they might as well have done a true reboot.

If they did that then they could have taken care of other issues like Vulcans being able to procreate with humans.

Re: Did you like the new Stardate system?

I think this hits in on the head..

My wife liked the movie, but I remember showing her an episode of TNG...with the Stardates she was a bit confused and I had to explain it to her, but I remember her seeing an episode of Enterprise, and when the year was given I remember her saying something like "Oh wow, 2151, really?" (she said the same thing when TWOK opened "In the 23rd century") , so perhaps this new system will help newbies get a better sense of the setting

Really? You care about the stardates?

There are so many things that one could legitimately complain about with this film and you're pissed about stardates?

I loved the fucking thing although it's not perfect. What issues it does have are nothing to do with canon.

I have many complaints about the movie. The stardate canon violation is one of them.

All of my complaints could have been addressed by doing a complete reboot.

Agree!:techman: It certainly makes more sense to ME now!

Re: Did you like the new Stardate system?

True confession: I've written ten STAR TREK books and I've never understood stardates . . . .

Agreed. I think I would have accepted a complete reboot better. Which would have meant no Nimoy. Just a complete retelling of the Star Trek Universe. No baggage. Keep some things throw the others out. By using the different timeline theory it just confuses things further.

A complete reboot could have been good too, but if you're open to that level of revisionism I don't understand why you had problems with this.

Re: Did you like the new Stardate system?

I like it. The most logical system for writing the date is yyyy-mm-dd. So today is 2009-05-09. Or 2009.05.09. It's logical because it goes from biggest denomination to smallest. years to months to days. when you're organizing a list or filing by date, you don't do it by whether it was the 1st or 15th of the month. You'd go by year, and then the month, and only at the end the day. Thus I've always found the British system of 1 January to be illogical. Not that Jan 1, 2009 reall makes any more sense.

Re: Did you like the new Stardate system?

As an audience viewer, I don't mind the new stardates, as it is based off the Gregorian calendar from which I am familiar with. But if I were a member of the Star Trek universe, I would think it would be naive and elitist to use it, since it based off time relative to the SOL system. At least in the TOS universe, we can explain the funky stardate numbers to be based of a unversal (or galactical) time measurement.

Re: Did you like the new Stardate system?

I didn't like it. It makes no sense to use "year.whatever" over just saying the damn date. How is "earthyear.whatever" a stardate?

I know the original system doesn't make sense (other than MT series which had a bit of logic to it) but that was sort-of the idea.

They could've used timestamps on the screen to tell us the year we were in.

I agree that it would be totally sweet if there was the stardate equivalent to UTC in the universe, but it has to be consistent so it means something. The TOS stardates never meant anything.
