The Daily Atrocity: Keanu Reeves as Jekyll

Temis the Vorta

Fleet Admiral

We should have a pinned thread called The Daily Atrocity - every new dawn brings some fresh evidence of Hollywood insanity. :rommie:

What, Johnny Depp was busy?

Keanu Reeves is becoming king of the sci-fi remakes. Fresh off his appearance in 2008's updated ["The Day the Earth Stood Still," Reeves will explore his dark side in a new version of Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

How does that man continue to get work? Seriously, there a dozens of talented actors who could do a better job. Not just Johnny Depp. Keanu's got the emotional range of Milo Ventimiglia. Sorry, Temis.

They ought to get Joey Lawrence to play one and Keanu to play the other.

"Whoa, I just made a new potion, I'm going to drink it."
"Whoa, I'm like a new person, I'm Mr. Hyde now."

It could work; he's been able to play reserved good guys in many films and had an arrogant dark side in The Devil's Advocate.

Another sign of the coming apocolypse.:p

I like Keanu....

I like him too.

He's got a broader range than most people give him credit for. I believe that in his biggest movies (the ones most people have seen), I think the director and producers hire him because they want that kind of subdued, serious feel.

But I know why people don't like him, he does often seem a bit like he's phoning it in.

So how's his British accent coming along?

It's not like one more movie on J&H is going to hurt the classic book - there are dozens, possibly hundreds of movies based on it at this point. But I think that the book is really unfilmable without major changes. For example:

-It's a mystery book, and the mystery is kind of ruined at this point. The Mystery aspect is really played up in the book.
-There are no real female characters. Certainly no love-interest.
-The meat of the story is told in flashback form, and Mr. Hyde is barely in the book at all.
-All the characters are old. Jekyll is 60. Utterson (the main character) is 70. The only 'young' character is Hyde.
-While Jekyll is large and imposing, a 'gentle giant' as it were, Hyde is small and short, basically a little weasle.
-It's a short story, they would have to add things to make it go over an hour.

Most of those very important points would have to be ignored for it to fit the 'Hollywood formula"

I've never read the original book but I have seen some interesting stage versions of it. There was an original adaptation that was put on by Arizona Theatre Company last year. It was quite good. It made the artistic choice of having Hyde be played by 5 different actors, depending on what aspect of the character they wanted to emphasize.

And for years I've wanted to see a movie adaptation of the musical version with Hugh Jackman in the lead roles.
