If TOS is your favorite series, has it always been?

I've gone through phases where I don't watch TOS for a long while. At times it has been a year or more (certainly before the DVD's came out). And the Star Trek series on at the time captured my interest over watching TOS. There was a point where I liked TNG more than TOS. Even at one time with Voyager (during season 4... it all went downhill after that).

But over time... I don't know if it's because I'm getting older, but I pop on a DVD for a momentary free hour and watch an episode, and in the back of my mind I think about the quality of what I'm seeing... and I really like this series. Even when I go about watching one of my least favorite episodes... there's always something of value in them, usually moments between crew members or particular situations that are rather unique (not found in other episodes).

So, right now, I have to say that if I had one series to pick from the four (I don't really count TAS) Star Trek series, it would be TOS. Yeah, the special effects are often lame, but that's easily overlooked for the other production values. At least for me, anyway. And although Shatner has annoyed me in a number of episodes, he also did some great work. He's still my favorite captain (at one time I preferred Picard).

Anybody else feel similarly?

TOS has always been my favorite series ever since I first saw an episode of it on NBC back in 1969 at the age of 6. (Enterprise comes in at a close second for me though - and it doesn't crap all over TOS canon the way some fans like to believe - and those that believe ENT didd honestly didn't pay a lot of attrention to TOS when they watched it). ;)

Mark me down as another who ranks TOS as favorite with DS9 as a close second. When DS9 was on its first run, during the Dominion War arc, I thought then it was the best. It is still excellent, but now that things have 'cooled down' since, TOS floated back up to #1.

TNG sits at a rather distant #3. I never made through the entireties of either Voyager or Enterprise.

For me, TOS is and always will be my favorite Trek. I remember watching it in the late 70's in rerun syndication and being enthralled by the storytelling.

DS9 is a close second for me too. :techman:

The remastered episodes have made me fall in love with TOS all over again. I watched all the spin offs, and the were usually, ho-hum, so-so and more often than not, mediocre and forgettable. But I watched them...once. I don't care if I ever rewatch them, they left absolutely no impression on me, other than how similar they all were.

TOS on the other hand, always delivers the goods. Hell, even when it was BAD it was good! lol. That's why JJ has gone back to the basics. The sleeping TOS giant has been awakened once more to remind the world WHY classic Star Trek and its characters are so much damn fun. TOS was, is, and will always be, my favorite.

It's nice to hear so many people say good things about 'The Corbomite Maneuver.' I think it's highly underrated.

I agree. I personally think The Corbomite Manuever is the best Star Trek episode (vs all the spinoff series too) ever made; and encapsulates and really captures the 'essence' of what made Star Trek great for me.

I'm always amazed it was the first 'regular' episode filmed (although aired 9th due to the time it took to complete teh SFX shots) because they really nailed all the characters well right out of the gate as it were (yes, even though there were two pilots made prior).

^ Agreed in full. If asked to pick an episode as an introduction to Star Trek for someone, "The Corbomite Manuever" is my choice. All the notes are there and it hits them almost perfectly.

The same here. :)

Ah, all is right with the world after all then. A round of tranya for everyone! :rommie:

Star Trek has always been, not only my favorite Trek, but my favorite show. Started watching very young when it hit syndication in the 70's. Don't remember my first time...it just seems like it was always there.

For me, it IS Star Trek, warts and all, because I remember when it was the only one. Everything about it defines Star Trek for me. Sure, I've enjoyed the spin-off's, TNG prolly more than the others. But in the end, my feelings for those shows is "meh" and if they disappeared forever I really wouldn't care.

Yes And Yes

TOS was my favorite till about the 3rd season of STNG. STNG is still my favorite.

TOS-R has made TOS watchable and respectable again. Getting any reason to watch the episodes over again in a new way was great for an old Trek fan, who admittedly was TOSed out.

To answer your question, yes. TOS has always been my favorite series right from the start - but it's followed very closely by TNG. This is mainly because TOS and TNG were the very first series I saw when I was first getting into Trek (back at the end of 2005). Furthermore, I've seen most (if not all) of the TOS episodes on my DVD's.

Actually no, it hasn't, I just couldn't stand Kirk's attitude towards females at all - but I simply adored the interaction between the big 3. And ultimately the lack of such interaction in the other series, the way the 3 just complement each other in their strengths and weaknesses, made me watch TOS episodes whenever they aired here. And I discovered that TOS has a very special place in my heart - one that none of the other Trek-series achieved.

Thus, despite its many flaws, TOS managed to overtake all the other series.

Gosh, yes. It's been my favourite for 25 years. In fact, it's my favourite TV series, because no other series inspires in me the same sense of wonder for the marvel that is the universe with its myriad possibilities.

I do enjoy TNG. DS9 somewhat less. VOY in places. I missed most of ENT.

Yes, since September 1966. TOS has always been my favorite with TNG as second. Never could get into DS9, Voy, and Ent, though I did watch them.
