Fate of Romulus (SPOILERS)

Albertese

Commodore
Commodore
So, Romulus is destroyed in 2382 and Nero is off to destroy the Federation. He realizes he's 120-odd years in the past. He realizes Spock's ship has the giant red jawbreaker of doom with which he can systematically destroy the Federation. He figures out when and where Spock's ship will show up and waits for him. He proceeds to follow through, getting as far as crushing Vulcan and digging a well in San Francisco Bay.

But what about Romulus? It seems like Romulus was destroyed because Spock wasn't able to meet the deadline. I have only read the first issue of the Countdown comic so I dunno, but it seemed like he was kinda railroaded by the senate until it was just too late. What would prevent Nero from getting the goods together to prevent to destruction of Romulus in the first place. They're long lived. He coulda just sat around for 120 years and then been there at the right place at the right time. Big damn hero stuff. I'm not sure I sense this dude's motivation. If he was that in love with his wife and son, wouldn't he have been motivated to wait around and fix the actual problem?

Then again, I've only seen the movie once so far, maybe it'll be clearer in the reviewing.

I haved wonderd that, I have come to the conclusion that after Nero planed to wiped out the major member worlds, then he would have gone to the hobos star of this Nu-Universe and drop the red matter in to it. I think however he was more interasted in just destroying everything related to the federation and SPOCK out of pure hatred.

If he didn't already go prevent the catastrophe that would destroy Romulus, then it won't be prevented this time around either. There is theoretically no Red Matter left to save the galaxy with, so the galaxy will be destroyed in 120 years unless they make or find some more and remember where and when to use it.

I might have missed something; but is it established that Nero went back to this timeframe on purpose? Perhaps it was just a accident of being near an exploding planet or something... He might simply wanted to take revenge in his own timeline, only to find himself stranded in the past.

During his interrogation of Captain Pike, Nero says he doesn't just want to save Romulus, he first wants to rid Romulus of the Federation once and for all (and make Spock watch while he does it). He must figure he still has over a century after that to save the Empire.

This raises questions about the nature of multiple realities. For Nero, in his native reality, his wife and unborn child have been killed with the destruction of Romulus. He is seeking to make the person who he sees as letting him down (Spock) pay for that. What good would it do him to prevent the destruction of Romulus in the reality he finds himself in after going through the black hole? Certainly, from a desire to help his own people, he may have that desire, and it may have been his intention in the far future-- after destroying the Federation, but it wouldn't return Nero himself to the life of happiness that he wanted to have with his wife and child.

This leads me to the question of what Spock Prime ought to do with himself at movie's end. Should he go back in time and try to prevent the destruction of Vulcan? Should he go forward in time and try to prevent the death of Captain Kirk? Or does Spock realize that in many other realities Vulcan is not destroyed and in many other realities it is destroyed. In some Earth is destroyed and in others it's not. This is the suggestion by those who believe in the theory of many (perhaps infinite realities): that everything that can theoretically happen, does.

Perhaps Spock realizes that all he can do is try to have a positive impact in the reality he finds himself in and that there is no way he can go from reality to reality and try to make each one perfect from his own point of view.

Nero didn't even know he had gone back in time. Remember in the movie his officer is asking the Kelvin Captain about the Jellyfish ship, Ambassador Spock, and what the stardate is?

Neither Nero, nor Spock purposefully went back in time, but when they got there they continued to operate from their personal motivations.

If you can read STAR TREK:COUNTDOWN It explains how Nero and spock ended up in that universe. And no it was not Nero's intention to go back in time at all, nor was it spocks!

What about Remus?

Remus, what Remus? :D

And to both MichaelStivic and miraclefan: yes, you are right, I forgot. It was indeed not his intention to go back into the past. So, what was he supposed to do in the future then? I'd like to think his ship wasn't that undestructible to begin with.

I belive remus was destroyed along side romulus as well.
It does seem to be implied Remus was destroyed as well. On the other hand, those Remans always were sneaky bastards... Perhaps they developed some kind of shield and knew all along about the Hobus star... :D

"The shock shifted the orbital approach of this planet and everything was laid WASTED!"

Sorry, couldn't help that one. I would assume Remus was destroyed and the supernova might have taken the whole empire with it.

Am I the only poster here who read COUNTDOWN?

I read issue 1 and was dying to get ahold of issue 2, but didn't until after issue 3 was out and then every comic store in the greater Portland area was sold out. "Bollocks" I thought. So I decided to hold out for the hope of a trade paperback edition.
