Really? In the movie I didn't even hear a hint that it was anything but a Romulan mining vessel.

The Countdown backstory makes it clear Narada is a Borgified vessel.

So it wasn't on screen, doesn't that mean they can just ignore it if they want to?

Perhaps Nero miraculously survived his ship being destroyed around him, and is holding his breath somewhere in another alternate timeline hoping to be rescued.

Well its pretty obvious that it wasn't just a mining vessel considering it can completely decimate a fleet of Klingon ships..

I agree, Nero COULD be dead, but they did leave his supposed "death" wide open.

Lets look at the facts -

The Narada was a 5 mile long spaceship, and while yes, the black hole formed inside it, cutting it in 2, and yes, the Enterprise fired at it taking off bits and pieces here and there, the Narada wasnt shown being completely destroyed. Seeing as the ship was "grown" rather than built in the first place, I dont see why any of the half mile chunks left behind couldnt grow and repair itself again.

On the flipside though, As much as I liked Nero's backstory, the sequel needs to move forward, and reusing Nero would seem a bit redundant.

One could say that whatever the black whole and Enterprise weapons fire didn't tear apart, the Enterprise ejected cores blast should have vaporized.
