(Spoilerish) If Chris Pine had duplicated the mannerisms of Shatner,

Captain Al

Commander
Red Shirt
How do you think the character of Jim Kirk would have come across?

I understand that Chris Pine didn't want to duplicate Shatner's pauses and vocal manner, and I respect that. I also understand, according to imdb and other sources that: "he wanted his performance to be original and not an imitation of William Shatner. He based his performance on Tom Cruise's Maverick and Harrison Ford's Han Solo and Indiana Jones, heroes who Pine felt possessed the archetypal hero qualities Kirk has (humour, arrogance, decisiveness)."

So, how do you think the character would have been if Pine in fact had duplicated Shatner's portrayal of Kirk?

I think that... the movie... might. have. come.

across as a...

parody.

I know we tend to think Shatner always talked with those pauses, but he didn't do it all the time.
What I'm getting at is there are a few times in the new movie where I could imagine Shatner saying Pine's lines if you know what I mean. I think it may have been the part where he tells Uhura he knows what xenolinguistics is.

I think "Wink of an Eye" had my favorite choppy Kirk dialogue... I wish that conversation he had with Deela were on YouTube. just when you think he's done, more chop chop chop.

Re: (Spoilerish) If Chris Pine had duplicated the mannerisms of Shatn

It would be a grievous mistake for Pine to have imitated Shatner. My first critique when NV/PII came out was that Cawley needed to own the role in his own way, which he has done since. I think it insulting to Cawley and his production when a director asks him for a bit of the Shatner-esque (see "Blood and Fire, part one") even if it's meant in good fun.

So I'm glad that Pine did not base his performance on what Shatner did all those years ago.

If I wanted an imitation of Shatner as Kirk, then I'd go watch Kevin Pollack or listen to Maurice LaMarche.
