May Writing Challenge - The Early Years

Count Zero

No nation but procrastination

Inspired by the new Trek movie and by my misguided love for Enterprise, this month's challenge will be to write a story set in the earlier days of Star Trek. In terms of date, your story should take place not later than the first few weeks of the first five year mission (or not long after the events of the new movie if you decide to write in the Abramsverse).
The Challenge will end at midnight on May 30th CET.

Apart from that, there are no rules. 100 words or 100.000, alternate Universes or canon obsession, anything goes. :)

Whoa...um...I may be sitting this one out. Don't know that I have any history built yet for this time period in either of my continuities. :(

Write something new! :) A one-off piece to shake your legs or some such thing.

I'm lost. Say I wouldn't touch the JJPrise with a twenty-foot pole and therefore that 'events of the new movie' thing goes right over my head. Got dates to make this easier?

According to Memory Alpha, the Kirk/Enterprise five year mission ran from 2265 to 2270.

So anything before then - founding of the federation, start up of Starfleet, something completely else :)

I would definitely be interested in your take of the early years of the Bajoran invasion.

Thats interesting... To be honest, i'm a little unsure on how to approach this, but i'll try.

Would've been interesting (and I've got a Dukat idea I'm kicking around for that time period as well)--but that's 24th century.

But I can go back as far as I want? Cardassia's history runs for a lot longer than humanity's, so if I went back into the 19th century by Earth standards, would that be all right? I've got an idea kicking around, IF that's permitted...

Bound to be Nerys, either way it'll be a heck of an interesting story. Neat challenge idea. I like the idea of it. A few fics out there already exploring that era but a one off spin would be cool to try.

It's up in the air if I'll have something for the contest this month, but if we were to have a story set in the Abramsverse, would we be able to work with plot points that may be spoilers?

I would say [and I might be speaking out of turn] that it would be ok as long as there was a spoiler tag in the title of the submission. I know I for one do not want to be spoiled until I can see it.

If you don't intend to write in the Abramsverse, you can disregard the date limit I set for it. Only the part of the sentence before the brackets would apply to you.

Yes, that's ok.

mirandafave already answered this. If you use plot points of the movie you should add a spoiler warning to your entry.

Tks, Count Zero...;)

Thanks...very helpful!

This is going to be a bit of an experiment in a lot of ways, if I can get it to come off the way I want, so we'll see how long it takes me to complete. But I'm really excited about it so I hope it works out!! :)

I'm not going to find the time to write a challange entry this month but I did realize that I have an old story which fits this month's challenge.

Now I've entered this story in a previous challenge which might make this ineligible for voting this time around. I guess that would be Count Zero's call. I'm completely fine with whatever the decision may be.
