A question for those who've seen the movie (SPOILERS!!!)

gastrof

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Exactly when does the majority of the film take place, compared to the original TOS timeline?

I've heard that older Spock is surprised Kirk isn't Captain of the Enterprise, so does that mean we're seeing events that take place during what should have been the five year mission?

Using what was (until now) the "official chronology" as a reference, when does the "action part" of the film take place, as far as you can figure?

2258 is the year. It is possible though that Spock does not know what year it is.

After emerging from the black hole, he was immediately captured by Nero and subsequently sent to Delta Vega. They probably didn't tell him what year it was. ;)

And since my Chronology isn't here, where does 2258 fall in regards to the original timeline?

The movie starts in 2233 with the destruction of the Kelvin. Since Nero mentions waiting for 25 years until old Spock arrives from the future it must be 2258. If I remember correctly, not a lot of time passes between the capture of old Spock and the destruction of Vulcan.
The bar fight takes place 3 years before the main events of the movie. Chekov is only 17 at the end of the movie.

Hmm...

After my last post it dawned on me that Memory Alpha was out there. I got this stuff there-

2257
Christopher Pike takes the USS Enterprise on her third five-year mission, and Pike's second as captain

2261
The USS Enterprise completes its third five-year mission. (TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I")
Robert and Nancy Crater start their archaeological research on planet M-113. (TOS: "The Man Trap")
James Kirk is romantically involved with Janet Wallace. (TOS: "The Deadly Years")
James T. Kirk and Carol Marcus's son, David Marcus is born. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
Uhura graduates from Starfleet Academy. (Star Trek Chronology)
Spock meets Leila Kalomi on Earth. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise")

2264
Tuvok is born on Vulcanis Lunar Colony.
(VOY: "Flashback", "Unimatrix Zero, Part II") *

2265
The Enterprise is assigned to a five-year mission of deep-space exploration, and command passed to the youngest captain in the fleet, James T. Kirk. The ship's primary goal during this mission was to seek out and contact alien life.

I gotta think some about all this. If there are any inconsistencies we'd need to explain "somehow"...

2262, huh?

*Uh-oh...

Explanation:
TOS timeline NCC-1701: launched 2245
Abrams timeline NCC-1701: launched 2261/2.

April and Pike's tours never happened because the ship (and possibly the Constitution project) as pushed back over a decade and a half.

Another question for those who have seen the movie (SPOILER):

Nero was waiting for 25 years for Spock to show up, right? Didn't anyone ever notice him sitting there? (Or how did those 25 years figure into the story? I think I may have gotten confused.)

Nero's ship was severely damaged by his battle with the Kelvin. It's possible that a large chunk of the 25 years was spent repairing the damage.

I think there was originally a sequence involving Nero being captured by Klingons that would have taken place during that timespan. However, this was eventually cut from the film.

More spoilers?

There is a deleted sub-plot where Nero is captured by Klingons and sent to prison after the Kelvin incident. It takes him 25 years to escape.

I think Spock Prime does not know the year.

Doesn't he? When he's feeding Kirk all the exposition, doesn't he mention the exact number of years that he was thrown back in time? (What was it....129 years or something? And when would that place the time of his departure in the timeline, relative to when we last saw him in "Unification"?)

Or am I mixing things up a bit? I know that at some point, someone mentions the exact number of years that they went back in time. I think it was Spock who mentions it, but it might have been one of the Romulans.
