To say that this thing about superheroes or that thing about superheroes is dumb is to say the history of mythology is dumb. If you look at it through a rational mind, of course its dumb. You can go back in history and say the the same thing. A warrior whose invulnerability originates from being dipped into a magical pool as a child is dumb. Some guy striking with a hammer against the clouds to create thunder is dumb. The sun being the wheel of a great chariot being pulled across the sky is dumb. Has gritty, gray toned, shaky cam downers like The Wire and BSG have made us so hard and cynical that everything that dares to tell a story with an extraordinary flair is dumb?? People with imaginations and a spirit of wonder don't care whether one aspect or another of a superhero costume or origin is dumb. And yes, I do take it personally, because, in a very big way, next to my parents, comic books helped shape my value system, my politics, and the way I see the world greater than any politician, religious leader, or sports figure has. They are our myths. Just as valid as the Epic Of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, or Arthur and his Knights of The Round Table. Beyond the origins and constumes, they speak to us. We just have to listen.
