A lover defends Voyager

I do think I understand that you perceive it differently my friend Tachyon, and I do hope I wasn't overly blunt in trying to get my point across.

Don't worry; you were not. You are one of the few around here with whom I can be sure that no matter how different our opinions might be, it is based on good conversation instead of criticizing just for a sake of it. :)

I found the specific episode. S2E16 "Q Who".

First off, she develops a strong instinct that something is up, which was never really present in her other appearances. Then we find out she knows the Q, that she can counter his omnipotent abilities and that she's an imp (not an elf, sorry). I don't feel like skimming through the whole episode, but by the end I was really wondering to myself why she didn't have a more major role on the ship considering her powers. That topic never got revisited in S2, ala Voyager continuity.

She knew that time was "wrong" in Yesterdays Enterprise, this could be natural for her people, like Picard was saying in the episode or it could have been because she an piard spent so long waiting by the space-time rift in that cave or her brief journey intot he nexus... Don't you think that Worf knows that the hand phaser he levels at Q will have absolutely no effect? Guinin knows a little Kung Fu, so it's the same basic principle of acting big when you're actually utterly fucked.

Saying the words "You're a droid and I'm a noid." aloud however is a culling offense.

I liked it on family Guy last week when Patrick Stewart said that he used to do it with Whoopie on set all the time, which was just awesome if he really did, because now i get to speculate about where on the bridge they... Or in Engineering, or if they traumatized those poor fish forever in his ready room by...

"sigh"

In Star Trek the secondary characters are more interesting than the primary characters and the b stories are usually more interesting than the A stories which always an generically seem to revolve around a ticking clock and certain doom.

Why can't everyday be big wheel of cheese day?

The real difference between Voyager and TNG was that with Voyager, once was enough and even the most whorish actor wasn't too inclined to return for a second helping.

Please don't forget that Vykan12 only has seen the first 2 seasons of TNG. As you can imagine that gives one a somewhat different understanding of the show...
Also try not to spoil him...

If he's going to be making his way through TNG, then I beleive that we have found the ideal witness to identify uncleansable love stains on the set that might suddenly arrive after Whoopie is given the run of the lot, because "when" is almost as important as "where".

When were Ted and Whoopie an item? Because if Pat was making a coculd of Mr Dansen, then that could explain why Booker stole Dax from Star Trek?

Guy, I knew there was something I liked about you.

Thats true. Would be interesting to hear if Vykan's opinions of DS9 and TNG change when he watches more seasons.

I am happy you like Voyager Vykan but perhaps you should not put down the other shows until you see more of them?

It should be interesting alright, seasons 1 & 2 of TNG are easily my least favourite and I didn't pay much attention to DS9 until season 3, and I only fell in love with it in season 4. I wonder if Vykan will have the same reaction that most of us seem to have had.

Well, I guess I should have kept that opinion to myself about that cause now it's come back to bite me in the ass. Sorry if I offended anyone but I get a little mortified when I see two women kissing..but that's just me. I guess I should have watched what I said..sorry to all of you fans out there if I ruffled any feathers.
Exodus: thanks for the stick up man. :D

I agree, though from my initial standpoint 2/7th of both series is a pretty large sample to base my opinion off of, and it seemed unlikely to me that those seasons were all of those respective series' worst. I now have S5-7 of DS9 and am currently torrenting 3 and 4, which I'm eager to watch. Maybe I'll talk about my impressions of it there when the time comes.

While 2/7 is a pretty big sample size, you have to understand that in television things can change radically within a single season, for better or worse. TNG's first two seasons were overseen by Gene Roddenberry and the head of the writing staff was a guy called Maurice Hurley, but Hurley left at the end of the second season and a guy called Michael Piller was brought in to replace him. Piller had a different style and got the writers to focus more on the characters and to rely less upon the sci-fi story of the week, and he also hired a lot of the writers who would make a big impact upon the show such as Ronald D Moore and Brannon Braga. Most fans consider TNG as a far better show from season three on, and I would even go so far as to say that TNG season 1 is the worst season Star Trek ever produced.

DS9 has a similar story, it was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller and Piller led the writing staff for the first two and a half year before leaving to work on Voyager. Piller tried to apply TNG's episodic style to DS9 but it didn't work out as well as it had on TNG, partially because it was set on a space station. When Piller left Ira Steven Behr took his position and Behr decided to make the show more serialised and much bigger in scope. The result is a show that was very different from how it started out, and most fans agree that the show was much better during the Behr years.

Just wait and see, both shows are really about to take off for you. :)

The size of the difference between season 2 and season 3 really can't be stressed enough, I found season 2 to be much worse than season 1 actually and hated it.
I find the season 2-3 transition is common to all of the Star Treks outside of TOS

TNG season 2 (horrible) - TNG season 3 (great!)
DS9 season 2 (not the best..) - DS9 season 3 (great!)
Voyager season 2 (not good at all imo) - Voyager season 3 (huge improvement..imo)
Enterprise season 2 (slightly boring) - season 3 (epic and very original, big improvement)

The third season of TNG is really when they start establishing their identitiy outside of just continuing TOS. They still 'boldy go where no one has gone before,' but they also start going deeper into the cultures of the big three powers - the Federation (though mostly through Starfleet), the Klingons, and the Romulans.

Voyager season 2 (not good at all imo) - Voyager season 3 (huge improvement..imo)

Interesting. For me Season 2 is one of the best in Voyager.

I agree. I actually find 3 to be one of the worst, if not the worst.

You know I just went thru season 2 to look for episodes I didn't like

The 37's
Initiations
Elogium
Non Sequitur
Parturition
Resistance
Threshold

and season 3 to see the episodes I didn't like

Flashback
False Profits
Fair Trade
Rise
Favorite Son
Real Life

And it seems there's really only one episode between them, it seems season 2 did have a lot of good episodes, I just think its overshadowed somewhat by just how bad the first 10 or so are. Season 3 on the other hand seems so much better because of how great the episodes at the end of the season were

Blood Fever
Unity
Before and After
Distant Origin
Displaced
Worst Case Scenario
Scorpion Part I

Overall I just think Season 3's good episodes were better than season 2's good episodes, especially that run of genius at the end of the season 3.

Well, I tend to agree that season two gets a bad rap because of the bad start. It looks like our difference of opinion is somewhat subjective - I actually like some of the episodes and dislike some of the episodes you like.

But season three did have a killer ending. :)

^^^ The Season 3 Finale left me on the edge of my seat. I know this will sound like blasphemy, but I actually prefer 'Scorpion' to 'The Best of Both Worlds'. I always have.
