Star Trek on New Cover of Entertainment Weekly

I dunno - his pro-Trek box office analysis leans heavily on the premise that the "better" movie will do better box office. I'm dubious about that as a general principle.

Wolverine has the advantage of an interested audience that's been built over - what, seven or eight years? - and three previous movies. Star Trek is starting over from scratch.

I'm pretty sure that Trek will do well, but it may require the positive buzz from this film to make the next Trek film a megahit.

If nothing else, TREK ensures that WOLVERINE will be the #1 movie in the nation for just one week and that'll be it.

The cover that mvrojo posted is different than the one Paramount posted for EW weekly.

See the cover here with Chris Pine and Zoe.

Yeah, I realized that today. I subscribe to EW and got the Quinto cover, but they note that there's two covers inside.

Wolverine will peter out in a week, I feel.

Of course EW does this, they love sci-fi and all genre fare. It's a terrific cover. I think EW is widely read and so this will put the new film front and centre to many.

I love Spock, but the Pine/Zoe cover looks better and will appeal to a bigger audience, I believe.

wow, sexy cover of Zoe and Chris Pine. is this out on the shelves yet? i'm headed down to Barnes & Nobles tomorrow for sure!!

Wow! I had to do a magazine redesign in my Typography class and I picked Entertainment Weekly out of a hat. I redid the then current issue that had Lost on the cover...and I had to make 2 more covers. One I redid was a previous Star Trek one. I used that exact picture of Quinto as Spock facing the same way.

I can see the future!

...even if Wolverine scores the larger opening, Star Trek's aura of novelty is why I'm predicting it will ultimately equal (if not surpass) that hairy mutant's tally.
Star Trek has staying power, in the reviewer's opinion. I agree.:techman:

Holy Hannah... the Pine/Saldana cover is amazing. :) I don't usually buy entertainment magazines, but I'll have look for it today. I wouldn't want to have to choose which one of them was hotter. Simply stunning.

I'm not so thrilled with the Quinto cover. Plastic, indeed.

That may be enough. In 2007 Transformers was No. 1 for only one week also (its opening week) and still made lots of money.

It may peter out, and that's what perhaps will be its downfall at the box office. Transformers did very well its opening weekend, but more importantly it stayed relevant (hanging around the top 3 films) for several weeks, and stayed in theaters for a couple of months.

If Wolverine disappoints at the box office, it won't be because of its opening week, but the weeks that come after. Star Trek could be No. 1 for only one week and STILL do better than Wolverine as long as it stays in the top 3 films in the weeks after the opening, and perhaps stays in theaters throughout the bulk of the summer.

I realize this isn't a race, so "beating" Wolverine isn't the ultimate goal, but Wolverine's box office take is certailny a benchmark that Star Trek wants to surpass.

I get the feeling WOLVERINE might be a very, very good film...but if it's going up against the first new TREK movie in almost seven years and the first new filmed Trek story in four then I'm not going to be rooting for an X-Men movie to do well. Sorry.
