Re: Does this movie imply a possible re-emergence of the television se
I dunno - it sounds like we're bounding into the realm of wishful thinking here.
"Spider-Man" didn't spawn a series, nor did "Lord of the Rings." Jay Leno is eating up an hour of Prime-Time every working day now - it costs them practically nothing. Reality TV is still in full force. This movie cost a king's ransom to make; a series would go bankrupt on just replicating the lens flares.
Spider-Man without cash is a guy in a gimp suit; LOTR without cash is Xena, Warrior Princess. Star Trek without cash is VOY/ENT.
"But it could be TNG!" Yeah - I remember that one. I remember playing with my Playstation 1 after watching it. Five years after the last episode aired, Playstation 2 was released.
Welcome to the real truth of "Star Trek - Generations." TOS Trek is nostalgia - corny, preachy, melodramatic, talky... the single most beautiful thing in my childhood, still beloved... and in three years, I'll be eligible for AARP discounts. This series is unacceptable for sale to modern audiences. TNG Trek is also now nostalgia - smug, corporate, Uber-preachy, nose-altered aliens... much beloved by thirty year old geeks, but you're not gonna capture the "Halo" crowd who can play more exciting scenarios on a videogame than they can afford to deliver on a weekly basis.
"OK - Then what aout BSG?" Sure - they could do that. Rust up the Enterprise. Make the Captain an alcoholic, Spock battle depression.... essentially all those things that CSI made fun of with that "Redux" episode. And all the Trekkies go "You Suck!!!" Star Trek is all about the bright, shiney future! You've raped my childhood! Soo.... no.
To this day, you've got people whining that Fatner isn't in the film. People here are GRUDGINGLY now accepting this new crew, against their own will. So what happens when the newly spawned "Waah, Quinto/Pine aren't in the show" people start crying?
A Different crew? We're back in ENT territory again, with no goodwill towards the crew nd at the mercy of the writers and production team to find a winning formula on a budget. Assuming the Quinto/Pineprise would still be spinning sequels, the sour grapes on this board would peel paint.
The future is fluid - anything can happen. But on a pragmatic level, a new series is going to be a nightmare to get right, and rushing into it would be Russian Roulete with the franchise.
