NHL Play Off Prediction thread

I don't know why you'd pick the Pens to win in 5. Aside from Fleury, they didn't look all that hot most games. Sure, they have a good team, but so do the Caps. I expect (and hope) that series to be a lot closer.

^ Agreed, they looked great for game 1, but that was it. If Varlamov continues his steady play, then this series will probably go to 6 or 7. Both teams have the scorers, both teams have the grinders and both teams have a front loaded defense. Pretty even matchup.

What a mouth watering matchup though, 3 of the best players on the planet who hate each other. Delicious, nom nom nom.

I just can't believe 4th Hanson Bro picked Chicago.

Canucks win game one 5-3 which is useful. They played well for the first two periods, but man that was quite a comeback by the Blackhawks.

That second period. Bleech. That was the worst I've seen Pittsburgh play all year, even during the downard spiral months.

I just can't believe 4th Hanson Bro picked Chicago.

If I picked the same as you, I wouldn't be able to beat you and claim the coveted "guru of hockey" title, now would I?

Both home teams in the West failed to hold serve, now it's a series.

Yeah, no doubt. Vancouver also lost Sami Salo and maybe Demitra in that game. That could really hurt our chances, especially with Salo out. I think Chicago actually looks better than they did against the Flames, they've really stepped it up. We've got ourselves a series here for sure though, but I think it's a matter of time before Luongo gets back in his groove and completely shuts the door. He's always rusty after a bit of time off. That victory for Khabibulin on Saturday was his first against the Canucks since 1998!

Can the Pens' win 4 straight after going down 2 games? I certainly hope so, because I think if the Caps take it to 7 games, Ovechkin and his boys will win.

...and what would be the Penguins' prize for winning game 6 on Monday? A chance to play either Boston -- the best team in the East by far in the regular season, or the 'Canes -- who are on fire right now and just may beat that "regular-season-best-team-by-far" in 5 games.

This year's playoff competition seems much tougher than last year. It's not for the faint of heart

^This year's playoffs have been damn good in almost every series. (Damn Red Wings.)

The Penguins became the first road team to win in the series, and the first to win after scoring first. They also sustained the momentum from Friday night's dominant 5-3 Game 4 victory. Thanks to back-to-back games caused by a Yanni concert in Pittsburgh, the young Capitals came home with little time to regroup.
God bless Yanni and his craptastic music. :adore: .

Wasn't one of those goals in the 5-3 victory an empty netter? I wouldn't exactly call that dominant.

^
^^You can't really go by the score...Pittsburgh was the dominant team in game 4 -- although the Caps have been dominant at times also during this series.

The dominant team isn't always the winning team, either. In the first round of the playoffs, the Flyers dominated the Penguins in at least one of the games that the Flyers lost.

Pittsburgh's been fairly dominant since game three. Ovechkin has been stonewalled through three games by Rob Scuderi's defense, and has been forced to cut to the opposite side of the ice just to escape Scuderi. Meanwhile, Semin has chosen a disasterous time to enter a scoring slump. Nothing's going their way. Sloppy penalties, pucks getting deflected into goal by their own defensemen, constant neutral zone turnovers.

Varlamov and Ovechkin (in game 5) are the only reason these games have been close.

Semin has done a great job singlehandedly creating scoring chances, but he can't quite seal the deal.

Paul Steigerwald (the Penguins' TV play-by-play guy) had a great line after another shot by Semin missed the goal:
[paraphrasing] "If they gave points for hitting the glass behind the net, Semin would be the scoring leader".

EDIT: ...I should add the Steigerwald did not say this in a mean-spirited way -- it was simply matter-of-fact. He was pointing out what I said -- Semin gave himself a lot of great chances, but couldn't quite finish.

This series between the Ducks and the Wings has been fun to watch. I'm glad that the Wings are up 3-2, but it's been a crazy ride getting here.

Well, unfortunately the three or four sleeping goal scorers on the Caps have woken up. Game 7 is going to be brutal.
