World Premiere/Advance screening discussions [SPOILERS GUARANTEED]

Y'know, if you live long enough you find out that a lot of what you thought was "canonical" about reality turns out to be fannish assumption. ;)

Nobody expects, THE FANNISH INQUISITION!

Sorry, I just had to say it...

Our weapon is canon. Canon and nitpicking. Our TWO weapons are canon and nitpicking and an almost fanatical devotion to Gene Roddenberry. Ah...amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as canon, nitpicking, an almost fanatical devotion to Gene Roddenberry, and nice red Starfleet uniforms...I'll come in again.

God Bless you, Babaganoosh and not just for being a Met fan, but for being fucking BRILLIANT! :guffaw:

How did you know I was a Mets fan? :)

Get...the COMFY COMMAND CHAIR!

I hope you're kidding... if not... I will be sad. :(

The class of the ship is never mentioned. During the mind meld, we see Spock Prime's ship, Romulus, and a few other things, but I don't recall seeing the Enterprise or anything explicitly TNG-related.

One thing I do not understand and I hope someone can help me out on this, maybe somebody who's seen the film....

In countdown spock creates a singularity by causing the Hobus supernova to implode, thereby getting sucked into JJ's World...and Nero causes Vulcan to implode, correct?

So if a starship getting sucked into the singularity is not destroyed but rather pops out in an alternate universe, does that mean that the debris from Vulcan will appear in another universe? I mean obviously if the planet is shown crumbling to pieces, it will not suddenly appear restored, and probably everybody on the planet will have been killed, but since he doesn't "blow it up" or "nuke it", does this mean that whatever is attacked by his drilling rig is essentially sent to another universe?

If one follows Orci's logic, the singularity sends Spock back in time, not into another Universe.

The new Universe is created when events branch away from the so-called "Prime Universe."

This is too goddamn funny....

I'm sorry, I know I am new to this forum, and I've really enjoyed posting here, but seriously...watching these naysayers nitpick and whine about the new film...what a bunch of walking stereotypes!

I mean, Star Trek beautifully portrays a vision of a future society, an essentially secular culture devoted to change, to exploring new worlds and new ideas, and yet it seems so much of its fan base has adopted an almost slavish devotion to a dogmatic, rigid interpretation of "canon"...

You people remind me of Mel Gibson and his ilk who want to take the Catholic Church back in time about 200 years, or the radical Islamists who would be more than happy to see the entire planet revert to a state that resembles the 7th century

Hyperbole? Perhaps...but every time you scream bloody murder when someone comes away having seen the new film and thoroughly enjoyed it enough to look past the minuitae of so-called canon, I start to chuckle to myself...its sad really...the last gasps of a dying breed who I think would rather sink Trek than watch it change
:vulcan:

Since you seem to have missed the part just up the page where I said this, allow me to post it again:

One more time, to everyone: discuss the topic. Do not discuss other posters or their supposed shortcomings. Do not talk about haters or whiners. Declarations of war are out, too. If you're not here to talk about Trek and this movie, please take it somewhere else.

Yes, which may also explain why the effects can't be reversed this time. The "prime" timeline has not been disrupted, so there's nothing to reverse. This is a legitimate unfolding of timeline on its own. As legitimate as the prime timeline. And, Spock Prime is apparently either trapped in it, or is not going to attempt to return to his universe. (Which has been shown as possible at least in certain circumstances in "Mirror Mirror" and in DS9.)

You must have read some of the things I posted in Sports/Fitness. I didn't know a lot of people from there frequented this forum. :)

Although if you're flummoxed as to how somebody who (given my 'location') is obviously a Yankees fan can also be a Mets fan...hey, they're both New York teams, and they don't play each other except in the subway series, so I feel entitled to root for both. :p

Maybe there is a bigger idea to this movie. Creation. Genesis, even. Even though it's accidental, Spock's actions in the prime timeline start events which create a strange new world (the new timeline with all its differences), new life (the characters as their lives unfold in this timeline), and new civilizations (the Federation and others as they'll be in that timeline), and it's certainly where no man has gone before.

OK, it's dorky, but it fits if you think of it that way.

It does. Ultimately it was always going to come down to this, like J. Michael Straczynski said in his "Reboot the Universe" series proposal. However, unlike that which would have been a complete clean break with it, at least here they honored the previous incarnations in a good way.

I just got back from one of the free UK Preview screenings tonight.

First of all I want to say I am disapointed... that there were no hot nerds in the film I could chat to... now onto the film!

Starting with the silly stuff...

I love how track 1 of the soundtrack covers the 3 movie/production company logos... That is a first and of course they are all animated.. I never thought I would spend a minute JUST watching logos for film companies although it does suggest that the film cost loads if 3 logos are up there!

There was so much in this film that I have to see it again to make sure there is nothing I missed! The screening I went to was only half full which was a shame considering it was a free screening and we had to hand in our phones before we could watch the film which was also a shame (as I was getting some rude messages from a girl and I couldn't reply!).

I wasn't sure about the start of the film.. It looked amazing but Kirk being born seemed a bit strange to me in that situation... like I don't see why we needed to see a pregnent woman being carted off to the shuttle like that (and how they made her look horrible) but thats serious nitpicking and it was a fun start.

NO opening credits either - just the Star Trek logo and title and then onto the Beastie Boys and the car chase.

I loved the Nokia product placement... cute.

I also thought those little alchoves where the vulcans were "studying" was very interesting and looked cool.

The guys at the bar were a fun little joke running through the film. And the incredibly funny point when Kirk ends up grabbing Uhura's boobs!

Nero was an interesting Character ... He wasn't interested in killing Kirk or indeed anyone else! all he seemed to want to do was destroy vulcan and the federation and make Spock watch and he seemed almost distracted by everything else. I have to say I love how Eric Bana played him.

Scotty was hilarious and his accent was great. I also really liked Chekov. He had the whole child prodigy thing down great and was fun to watch.

Scotty's little pal was also cute to watch and I can only wonder what he and Spock Prime talked about after Scotty and Kirk beemed aboard the Enterprise.

I have to say the monsters on the Delta Vega were cool... that red lobster thing was a cool scene as well... and the way Kirk was running away was fun as well.

I agree about the ending being a bit of a boring way out but the ship was invincible with all that Borg technology (not that it was ever mentioned) and so only using the red matter would work!

I have to say again I loved the effects... That bug that we saw in TWOK again being used was a cool little homage though I thought Nero putting it in Pike's mouth was less disgusting that in the ear! and they should have kept it like that.

I was kind of annoyed at how Spock Prime sounded like he had no teeth whenever he talked but I guess he is old so what can you say?

I am sure I will think of more things to comment on later and from reading through the posts here but I didn't watch the end credits which looked fancy with the planet effects as I wanted to get my phone back ASAP and watch the football match that was on...

Two more thoughts... I didn't like how enginerring never had a main "core" to it. That was a shame - it just looked too much like a room with nothing going on anyway in particular on both the Enterprise and Kelvin.

I found it odd that when Scotty ejected the warp coreS it was in 4 parts!? What was that about?

I also loved the phaser fight on the Naranda... it was fast and furious and the way the guys hit by them looked was cool although my only complaint is you never get to see that it is an energy weapon as its just super fast bursts of light flashing across the screen.

On another random note was it my imagination or did Sarek look just so wierd? Maybe its because I am used to the original from the movies and TNG but he just looked odd!

All in all an awsome film... lots of fun. Lots of action. Lots of jokes.

I need to see it again next week when it is officially out.

Thank you, you all are making such excellent points I hadn't considered...

If memory serves me correctly, Spock Prime was born in the 2230s which means he is "only" about 160 in 2387...so certainly one would assume that he still has the energy and faculities to make a positive contribution to whatever continuity he stays in...that being said, he has a choice between two clusterf***s: if it is indeed possible for him to engineer a return to the mainstream, post-Nemesis universe as some have suggested, he could aid in the clean-up of the Romulan Empire after the destruction of one of its homeworlds (or was Remus destroyed as well? I didn't actually read Countdown, sorry!)

Or, he can remain in the nuTrek universe and aid in the clean-up of the Vulcan Holocaust

Given that he has demonstrated devotion to both societies in the past , it's sort of interesting that he is presented with this choice...but if he stays in the nuTrek universe, and aids the Vulcan survivors, who's to say he could also devote some of his energy to re-unification in that timeline? It may be far flung, but even with the antipathy towards the Vulcans that we've seen the Romulans display, who's to say that they may not see it to their tactical or political advantage to aid their supposed "distant cousins?"

The plot thickens...

Or maybe only in my head...:)

I'm glad they found a "cute" way to insert the product placement...these little details dont bother me as much anymore, bills have to be paid, movies are expensive, blah blah blah (insert standard movie industry economics boilerplate here)

Thats probably the only real problem I've had with the Trek universe as its portrayed...I have high hopes we will indeed find a way to travel interstellar distances (although I reaaaaaaaaaallllly doubt by 2063, I'd believe maybe 2563), and I seriously doubt that we are completely alone in the universe, but I think its far-fetched to assume money will go the "way of the dinosaur" anytime soon...as a noted biologist (and I forget his name) once said, socialism may work fine for ants, but with people? Not so much! So if companies like Levis have been around for so long, I think that a couple of hundred years from now you might see a JD label on a bottle somewhere, if only for nostalgia

May 7th cannot come fast enough

Worst...period of waiting...ever!

I wonder how they're going to deal with Romulans in this new verse if they turn up in a non time-travelling guise. Are we going back to bumpy foreheads, or will the entire race all be feeling a bit gloomy and tattooed?

Although its funny that Kirk may be swilling Budweiser in this film, and yet later on looks at a bottle of Michelob in Save the Whales like its from another planet....does this portend bad things to come for the Anheuser Busch line?

There was some study that said that people who are more likely to get copious tattoos are also more likely to suffer from low self esteem...nothing more depressing than having your planet destroyed...perhaps we're looking at a future society of anorexic cutters?
