What's your middle name?

Georg

(simply the German version of George)
Rather outdated for my generation but it could be worse.

Marie - after one grandmother and one great-grandmother. I like it.

Why do we even have middle names anyway? What purpose do they serve?

Any number of purposes. For one thing, if you really hate your first name, you've got a built-in alternative. For another, it's helpful for purposes of differentation if you have a really common first name and a really common last name. (If you also end up with a really common middle name, I'm afraid you're SOL.;) ) Besides, it lets your parents name you after somebody without your being called "little Marie" the rest of your natural life.

by the way I have TWO! middle names if you can belive it!
I have two middle names as well. :bolian:

Lots of people I know use their middle names as the one they wish to be known as.

Just ask James Paul McCartney and William Bradley Pitt. :D (The latter I'm sure in order to avoid being associated with former British Prime Ministers...)

Me, I've been threatening my parents to use my second name as a given name in the future. They say, "Meh."

Maxine. If it weren't for the family connection of it, I'd probably hate it. But it has special meaning, and I don't have to use it for anything. ;) I do always include my middle initial in my signature, just to kind of indicate the significance it holds.

Matthew. Well, actually I have two, but that's the first and the one that shows up on paperwork more often.

I don't particularly care, I don't think of myself as a Matthew....

My middle name is Margaret which is also my mother's middle name. I am not all that found of it.

I think I am luckier than my brother who got Dad's middle name of Harold.

My sisters have Lorraine and Helen as their middle names.

My sons were given two middle names each because their father had two middle names. My sons are

1) Daniel Gregory Leigh (Gregory is one of his father's middle name)
2) Adam Richard John (John's is his father middle name)
3) Marcus Francis James (Francis was his father's first name)

Marcus has changed his surname legally from his father's surname to my maiden surname. When he did this he dropped the Francis from his name.

Indeed. My father has been going by his middle name practically all his life. I guess he didn't want to be known as Jim Jr. I can't say I blame him.

My mom's father has always used the name Norman on official forms and documents, which, as we just found out a few years ago, is actually his middle name. Yet for reasons that remain unknown, everyone calls him Sam, which is neither his first nor middle name.

Ironically, if I did go by my middle name, my parents would have threatened to call me "Junior". :guffaw:
