I agree with both of you. Wesley takes so many unfair hits, when it is just his youthful nature and optimism.That Wesley line was in one of the earliest episodes of Trek I watched and around the time I started to become a fan. As a kid that line really resonated with me. I wanted to be Wesley and a part of that Federation. Don't hold the innocent naivity of children against them.
I so concur. That line totally fits that character. Now if Riker said it, then yeah, stupid. But it is right coming from young Mr. Crusher.
IMO, almost anything Troi says is cheesy. It's part of 1980s-1990s "psychology fixes everything" crap.

I always found this exchange from that episode really cheesy:

There's nothing wrong with the line itself-- it was a good line the first time Worf said it (I think it was in TNG's "Redemption.").
But on DS9, the writers decided to have not only Worf but every Klingon character say it regardless of the context-- and I thought that example was the worst, because the Jem'Hadar had just quoted his slogan, and Worf's response made absolutely no sense except in a "You said your slogan, so I'm gonna say mine" way. They should have had Garak say "There may be hope for you yet" next or something.

Maybe, maybe, "Today is a good day to die," was non-cheesy once upon a time, but I find it really cheesy.
Especially because I picture Klingon weather reports: "Today is going to be a hot one, making conditions for dying today favorable. So grab your Bat'leths and start swinging, today is a good day to die. However, tomorrow is going to be rainy with a decreased acceptability of dying."
I know this board has a habit of pointing out Avery Brooks acting, and normally I'd disagree, but hearing him do his, "Just don't stand between me and the blood wine," bit reeks of cheese to me.

Klingon weather reports... You know, I'd honestly never given it much thought, but actually, that'd be pretty awesome to actually see.
As for Avery Brooks' line there... Sisko's portraying a Klingon, and a half-drunk one at that. Klingons are always over the top, and adding alcohol... Yeah, doesn't bother me. Besides, even if it is cheesy, it's still got plenty of (blood)wine to go with it.
