If "purist" means I only like STar Trek, then yes. I feel the spin-offs had very little in common with the 60's classic. Very different animals indeed. I'm glad JJ Abrahms remembered the elements that made TOS so special and is tapping into them...something Rick Berman refused to do.

If you bring in later series, you have to accept assumptions about the universe which the original authors and producers never had in mind when making the first series.

I'm a purist in the sense that TOS (and TNG-DS9-VOY-movies) had their time in the spot light. They entertained me and shaped me into the Trek fan that I've become.
I don't see the need for reboots because our Trek universe is what made me like it.
As a purist (as per my notes above), I really think that the new movie really has to stand alone in almost a non-trek category. As a prequel in a non altered timeline, it had a chance to compliment TOS and add to it.
As a purist, that doesn't mean I'm opposed to change. But to me that means something added to what already exists- not a complete alteration. Its pointless and takes away from what we have and adds absolutely nothing of value.
TOS is what it was. We can have new stories about them. They can still be relevant and exciting and contemporary to our values of today.

I'm a purist whenever I settle into a good TOS ep. There is a density to those eps that is quite different from the later shows, as fun and great as they can be. The density of colors and sound, and the general intensity of TOS tends to be at a higher level. For instance, you tend to see Kirk, Spock, McCoy, or an antagonist go to the intensity level of Picard's "there...are...four lights!!!!" nearly every episode.

I think you may want to reconsider. The chest was a sort of Montalban trademark long before even his first Trek appearance and continued so up through his second.
A purist is a dreamer, with no chance on ever fulfilling their ideals...there is nothing really pure. Much like Nazi-ism. Who is to judge what standards are pure? TOS or STNG for example never had a single unadulterated vision. You can't completely hold one idea up that was never contradicted or changed. A purist is a myth, Star Trek purist doubly so. I would never resign myself to such a fate, therefore I am not a "purist". I like change, I accept it and judge it as it comes along on its own merits. Those who adapt last longer...

Actually, it sucked harder than anything Trek ever did post-TOS. But a nice exchange there, nonetheless.
