I've loved Star Wars as long as I can remember and didn't get
really into Star Trek until, um, last week (*is ashamed*), but that's simply because I was introduced to SW as a child whereas whenever ST came on TV my parents went "ew!" and changed the channel (yeah I dunno). So with that, here's my take:
My experience is that Star Wars is more acceptable. somehow. like, the general public has this idea that to be a Star Trek fan you have to go totally all out and go to cons and learn Vulcan, whereas while there are Star Wars nutcases (I say this endearingly), you can also just like the movies. in an ordinary way. It's just gotten more mainstream.
I think this might have something to do with the fact that SW is such a... canon piece? I mean, it absolutely changed cinema, and there's kind of an idea that you
have to see Star Wars in order to be a functioning adult. So I think there's simply more exposure, too. Whereas Star Trek has always been more cult...
also, it is much easier to watch all of Star Wars than to watch all of Star Trek.
This has never struck me as a good thing. Actually the fact that the first couple of episodes I saw were Wesley-centric kinda turned me off for a while...
'Star Wars' is samurai knights in space, whereas 'Star Trek' is a space western. I guess knights beat cowboys...
but cowboys have guns!
Star Wars has the E-woks

I believe you have it upon a key factor in the suckage of RotJ.
