Star Wars and slavery

The Jedi are pretty objectionable with taking children so young and then demanding all those sacrifices of their lives. But for all their extremism, they seem to have a degree of pragmatism-we got to them so that the baddies don't. Joining the Jedi or being left alone, there's the chance that the Force-sensitive children could go bad, and naturally the Jedi have faith that they're the best way to avoid the Dark Side.

Yeah, that's another thing I find really bizarre. Had Anakin been allowed to see his mother or live openly with Padme he might have been able to chill a little bit.

That the reason they take the children so young, so they don't have any emotional ties to anybody to cause this. I believe this is a practice Buddist Monks use in their way of grooming those who are potentials to become the next Dali Lama.

I do wonder about how the Jedi Order has come to be depicted as it was shortly before its destruction by Vader and Sidious, as sort of a quasi-religious order whose members are expected to eschew "personal" matters and most possessions. The latter actually makes some degree of sense since Jedi were sent to many places and might have to leave in a hurry, but other aspects don't make as much sense to me.

In TPM, Padme seems shocked that slavery still exists outside of the Republic. But aren't the clone troopers slaves?
I'm not sure why she was shocked that slaves existed, given that the replublic just allowed a corporation that for some unfathomable reason has a seat on their senate to invade her planet and enslave her people.

Doesn't that sound like the actions of a government that would turn a blind eye to slavery?

Or for that matter why in the OT the Jedi are seen as semi-legendary to the point where certain people don't even believe the Force exists.

Because no such act was ever allowed before in Republic space.
Remember even Nute Gunray questioned if what they were doing was legal.

I don't think George Lucas even knows what slavery is. With the exception of that dumb explosive device, how exactly was Anakin and his mother a slave?

Yoda himself is a tad of the hypocrite. He tells Anakin not to get attached yet he says "Chewbacca, I will miss you" or some such, because he GOT attached to the furball...

So, does that mean our computers are slaves?

Umm, they were owned by Watto.
And wasn't Watto suposed to be based off the JEWS or something? I remember when this came out (tpm)and there was a tiny uproar from the JEWISH communaty about Watto or something?

Well, in the original cut of the film, Watto was a Jewdarian.

Also, Jar-Jar said some very anti-semetic things in said cut.

It's not surprising given that unless you are force sensitive the Force is just an abstract concept to most people. Sure the Jedi claim they can touch it but many religious orders claim they have special communion with supernatural powers, that doesn't mean you just believe them. Add to the fact that the bulk of the galaxy would never have seen let alone met a Jedi before. Maybe not a perfect comparison but I compare it to people who claim they can "speak to the dead." I can't so I'm very sceptical of their ability to do so, that is despite the fact I've seen many instances of this on TV in fictional shows and in "reality" shows like that one hosted by John Edwards.

Things I learned about Slaves in Star Wars.

1. Slaves live in a two story house, complete with individual rooms, kitchen, a table to seat six, a patio and gadgets that make life easier.
2. Slaves can build their own pod racers, robots, and all sorts of funky devices that in NO WAY could possibly be used to somehow disable their in-body exploding devices.
3. Not only can they build robots, but they can be used to help slaves with their slave labor work! The slaves are building slaves!
4. And not only can they build pod racers, they can actually race in them in actual tournaments!
5. Slaves can walk anywhere in the streets and pretty much do whatever they want like buying groceries and playing out doors with other kids
6. Slaves get PAID!

Surely this was indeed a retched, deeply tragic beginning for Anakin Skywalker....

Frell it. How is this Slavery?!?!

Hmm... so basically it seems like a "slave" is someone that's sort of indentured to one "employer" basically... gee. Sounds like a helluva "no-compete clause" huh?

HOLY SHIT! HALF OF US ARE SLAVES! AHHHH

Most people in the U.S. have never met a secret service agent. Does that make them legendary, or mean most people doubt they exist. What about a Navy Seal? Or movie stars?

The Jedi, according to the prequels, were a huge part of life in the Republic. It makes no sense that a mere 30 or so years after they are wiped out that people suddenly know next to nothing about them, or doubt they exist.

Understandable, but of mediums (the term for such people) were a huge part of the governing body of your nation and made no secret of their ability to do things like it push objects or tell the future, it would be silly for the common citizen to doubt they exist.

This would have made sense if the Jedi were operating in secret. Sort of like the equivalent of the MIB, where its possible they exist, but other than disparate sightings nobody knows whether they exist or not.
