CNN: "Star Trek" could rival "Dark Knight"

They're overstating the case, no doubt, but it's a generally extremely positive article from a major U.S. news organization:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/04/22/star.trek.screening.room/

Wait until the other media heavy hitters start to weigh in over the next week or so...

One of the big questions surrounding the film to date has been how the franchise's die-hard fans, known as Trekkies or Trekkers, will react to the all-new "Star Trek."

Short answer: in one direction or another, a lot of us are just bugfuck about it.

The hype building around the 11th "Star Trek" film suggests that it could turn into a movie event to rival last year's Batman movie, "The Dark Knight,"

Glad to hear it--TDK was, IMHO, one of the BEST films I've EVER seen!

Non-Trek, of course.

and introduce "Star Trek" to a legion of new fans.

You're dang right, it will!

I PERSONALLY have encountered many a folk who usually woudn't give a rat's rear end about Star Trek--and yet, are REALLY interested in it, for at least one of the following reasons:

1. They're fans of JJ's work (usually "Lost" or "Fringe").
2. They LOVED "Transformers", so are BEGGING for more material from Alex and Bob.
3. They're fans of "Heroes" (i.e., Zach Quinto).
4. All the hot, kinda-big-name female actors (Jennifer Morrison, Winona Ryder, Scarlett Johanson, Zoe Saldana).

I don't see this movie rivaling The Dark Knight. I can see this being like Batman Begins, where it sets up the sequel that really hits it out of the park though.

And Chris Pike loses his girlfriend and blames it on Starfleet, and Kirk ends up being the one who puts him in the beeping wheelchair and takes the blame for all the people Pike killed. :p

I'm slightly incredulous at all this praise. I was expecting at least a slightly mixed reaction.

Anyway, it's good to see that the buzz is getting noteworthy.

I have to agree with the comments going around in the other thread. Paramount really is pulling a PR miracle if they're getting Zoe Saldana in the same star-category as Winona Ryder.

There was a guy the other day pointing out over at HitFix that Paramount has pulled off a PR miracle by getting Pine on the cover of upscale magazines in the category of "rising star" based on a Disney movie, an independent and his upcoming appearence in a Star Trek flick.

Zoe Saldana could possibly have a huge break-out career-making year with Star Trek and a big role in James Cameron's Avatar.

Calm down, people. Isn't it a bit early to be saying such things as "Trek XI will rival The Dark Knight?" After all, when all is said and done, the movies from last year that we could end up comparing it to could be at worse Hulk, at best Crystal Skull. Hell, this could even go over like The X-Files did.

Your daily dose of a cynical fanboy.

There was extra interest in TDK due to the death of Heath Ledger. I'm sure that fact was partly responsible for the large opening-week numbers.

While i too doubt Trek or any other movie can rival the DK right now, who cares ?

I'd rather keep hearing positive reviews and hyperboles than crying, whining and mockery by the media.

So will Trek manage to get more than 11 oscars ? Let's start an oscar buzz...:p:p
