An awesome noobie rant

Excellent. :techman:
I haven't had a chance to see the old series, but I can identify with a lot of what this guy says. (Although I'm a tiny bit less taken in by the show.)

I was going along for the ride, listening to what he said, taking it with a grain of salt. Until he got to Mel. I think I blacked out after laughing too hard. I might have injured myself, but man, so worth it!

Fabulous! I feel I want to invite the guy round for supper. I expect he's got interesting stuff to talk about in a range of subjects. Thanks for the link The. I love his enthusiasm and insight! :bolian:

I could really relate to a lot of what this guy says. Almost makes me want to go and see the old series now. I'm just not sure where to start.

You know the concept, so I would recommend something "light".

City of Death, by Douglas Adams.

Stars the 4th incarnation of The Doctor (Tom Baker). In this life, he's a wandering bohemian whose eccentric, alien detachment is equaled only by his sheer brilliance and childish temperament.

The story is silly but tight. The actors are all top-notch, and I don't consider there to be a weak link in the story. Plus, it has the added bonus of featuring what some consider to be this incarnation's definitive companion, Romana II (Lala Ward). Baker and Ward were in a real-life romance at the time, as well, adding to the already palpable chemistry of filming on location in Paris, France.

I rate this as my single favorite Classic Doctor Who episode. Do yourself a favor and try it out. Many other fans will scream for you to get Genesis of the Daleks or some other ultimate classic. While I agree on their status, I believe it's far smarter to ease yourself into the low-budget era with an episode that doesn't bear the weight of needing to be a cinematic triumph. A good story, great filming location, a great Doctor/Companion duo, the legendary wit of Douglas Adams filtered through the lockjaw mind of Tom Baker...you simply couldn't ask for much more.

Hope you enjoy it. :)

This advice is not falling on deaf ears. ;) I'm taking notes.
If I do get my hands on this episode and it shows sights of Paris that I'm familiar with, I'll doubly enjoy it.
(Not trying to show off, but I used to live 5 minutes' walk from where they shot all the exteriors in the Parisian episodes of Highlander. It's a very pretty walk. Too bad they revamped the outside of the little church though, since then.)

Hah, the guy's absolutely right about our least favorite Doctors, and I never thought of it like that. I love his positivity.

Alien faces appearing in time bubbles for no good reason, and artists drawing weird pictures because it illustates the big themes of the story?
But I don't care. It's still brilliant.
