Undiscovered Country defenitely the best...it had the more of the original spirit than the rest (aka. the Spockfest). TWOK was oly so-so because of Meyers not understanding the basics. (Had to get in and screw with anything and everything he could...)

Of course film is the directors medium to control Vs television where it is the producers medium (control). Hell, even Robert Wise missed the boat...er...ship with TMP.

I voted First Contact. Its still my favorite despite the fact that many seem to be turning against it of late. I really think Nemesis lowered some peoples opinions about all of the TNG movies. When First Contact first came out man I was blown away! It is just such a fun adventure from start to finish and the music is the best in all of the Trek movies IMO.

Best to worst and assorted commentary

1. ST II satisfying action, Kahn rocks and saves movie from Shatner's poor
acting. I feel special effects and quality of film stock are not up to par. Mainly from wrecking the beautiful pearlescent finish that the Enterprise had in TMP. Still best Trek film. Only now after hundreds of rewatchings are it flaws truly bothering me.

2. ST IV Very rewatchable and mainstream, great balance of humor and plot, plus I do like whales.

3. ST III Under rated. I feel there is a lot to like about this film. Many great moments such as the theft of Enterprise, destruction of Enterprise and various performances by the cast. I am a big Commander Kruge fan plus Sarek is good. Visual quality is much much better on model shots than TWOK as is the Genesis planet. I like the music better than TWOK as well. Very slight negative points for terrible Excelsior bridge set and 1984 Uhura hair.

4. ST:TMP Epic, best score, great plot. V'ger is otherworldly and terrifying. Does have slow pacing and really only needs to be watched one or twice a decade. Of TOS films I feel the special effects are in many ways unmatched until ST:VI

5. ST VI Overrated. Bizzare and stupid dialouge such as " Praxis exploded because of unsafe mining procedures...we are lodging an OSHA complaint" and Spock's Nixonian quips. Still it was an eligant and fitting retirement for Captain Kirk which should not have been revisited in Generations.

6. ST:INSURRECTION Best TNG film, not deep but again relatively harmless. I agree much like a tv episode.

7.ST:First Contact Over rated but workable. I can easily see why some believe this to be the best TNG film, however the Borg have no need for a Queen, it only cheapens them. I feel FC almost as much Voyager wrecked their coolness.

In Voyager's defense many of those episodes not featuring the Queen are quite enjoyable. Also many major characters are not emotionally themselves especially Worf, Beverly and Picard. Picard is practically flying off the handle with rage.

To parody Lloyd Bentsen "I knew Zephram Cochrane Sir, you are no Zephram Cochrane".

Also very dicey plot holes with time travel. Only ST:IV pulled it off sucessfully so far in cinema.

8. ST:Generations Extremely bad lighting both for interior and exterior shots. I felt like I was in a dimly lit amber basement the entire movie. The Nexus was interesting but its temporal nature leads to large plot holes. Plus I absolutely hated this movie when it came out for killing not only the legendary Kirk but the beautiful Enterprise-D. In ST III the Enterprise was 20(40) years old so at least she died with dignity.

9. ST:Nemisis Pointless, why was this made? Data looks older than dirt. Really didn't need that mind raping of Troi or Rikers fight to the death in the bowels of the Enterprise either.

10 ST V Crap. Terrible plot, weak attempts at campy humor, many continutiy errors and unlikeable Klingons. I did enjoy some scenes but you can't make a feature length movie out of 5 minutes of clips. Also truly aweful special effects.

It's always been TUC by quite a margin for me. The film has a few details I don't like (like Valeris demonstrating something to Chekov he should know), but I think it's very powerful overall and significantly more engaging than any of the other films.

IMHO this is a film that's not only true to its characters and the premise but also manages to mix politics and crime with sci-fi elements (the cloaked Bird of Prey) to create edge-of-the-seat material right up to the end. Add to that some great performances, a worthy adversary, some interesting character material for Kirk and Spock in particular, as well as what I feel is the best of the movie scores, and you've got an excellent Trek movie all around. Oh, and it manages to be IMHO an excellent swansong for the original crew which they never got on TV.

This is how I rank all the movies:

01. TUC
02. FC
03. TVH
04. TMP
05. TWOK
06. TSFS
07. TFF
08. GEN
09. INS
10. NEM

TFF could certainly benefit from new Remastered effects for a special 20th anniversary DVD/BluRay release this year. Fix the lousy Bran Ferren opticals and even the "meh" story will go down a little smoother.

1. ST VIII: First Contact-I just love me some BORG.
2. ST VII: Generations-Two of the greatest Captains together in one movie and on a sadder note, touching with Kirk's death and the Enterprise-D is destroyed.
3. ST II: Wrath of Khan-Spock dies
4. ST X: Nemesis-Data dies
5. ST III: Search for Spock-Hey, Spock's back
6. ST I: Motion Picture-Star Trek comes back on the scene and inspires all.
7. ST VI: Undiscovered Country-an overall good story.
8. ST IV: Voyage Home-Save the whales!
9. ST IX: Insurrection-The Riker maneuver
10. ST V: Final Frontier-'What does God need with a starship?'

You have TVH twice, but The Final Frontier is missing.

Of course, if you are trying to forget that TFF exists, I won't blame you...

Sorry, my bad. And thanks for pointing it out. I corrected it up above.

Mental note: Do not post rankings when tired.

It could, but I doubt Paramount will spend the money. If they couldn't see fit to spend more than half a million on The Motion Picture: Director's Edition, I don't see them shelling out a penny more than necessary to make sure The Final Frontier looks good in HD.

Probably true, but a real shame. To be honest and for the most part, only the hardcore devoted fans bought the TMP Director's Cut to begin with so they could spend less to remaster TFF and the sales wouldn't likely be much worse.

It's not a matter of remastering, though; some of the special effects shots need to be totally redone. The movie has looked that awful since 6/9/89, and no amount of remastering will change the overall shoddiness of Bran Ferren's work.

Sadly, you're correct. That Great Barrier alone is just embarrassing. Looks like someone swirled luminescent paint in a fishtank. Which...knowing Bran Ferren...isn't likely far from the truth.

I'm sure TFF will be remastered for the Blu-ray release, but if they weren't willing to give The Shat money for a director's cut back when they did the two-disc DVDs, I doubt they're going to be any more likely to now.

Aw, I liked the Great Barrier. :(

Most everything else looks crap, though.

I lean towards Star Trek - the motion picture, because of it great visuals, its epic scope and because I truly see it most like the series, Scotty was still Scotty and not a comic relief character, Kirk was not fat, the Enterprise looked amazing and the storyline made you think.

Ferren did most of his work in TV commercials. Low-demand sorta productions. He was on Cloud 9 when he got the TREK V contract but I'm sure he knew he was in waaaay over his head.
