Ok, sign me up. I love the Cornwell books and Jolie to me makes sense. :techman:  I do wonder if they will stay true to the character of Pete Marino though.

Angelina Jolie to play Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta

Angelina Jolie has signed on to portray crime novelist Patricia Cornwell's heroine Dr. Kay Scarpetta in a forthcoming movie from Twentieth Century Fox and its Fox 2000 division. The screenplay will be based on Cornwell's bestselling Scarpetta series of books, about the beautiful, hard-charging medical examiner who solves crimes, but it will not be focused on any one specific novel. The project has yet to hire a screenwriter or a director. Mark Gordon and Geyer Kosinski will produce.

While I'm glad that a movie is 'in the works', I have to say that I don't see Jolie as Scarpetta. I've never really thought of Scarpetta as beautiful. Pretty, yes, but not "beautiful".

Scarpetta is a very complex character and I think Jolie can really pull it off. She can go with the classic good looks vibe I think of Scarpetta having. She did that in Changeling.

I'm more worried that they'll pretty up Pete Marino which would really suck.

I haven't read any Scarpetta novels in years but I would never have pictured her as looking like Angelina (who admittedly was an unknown the last time I did).

What with the movie version of The Bone Collector having failed to set the world alight, you'd think she might have shied clear of adaptations of novels. But as I read it, this will be a cinematic character called Kay Scarpetta - it won't be adaptations of the Cornwell novels. More like what has been done with the Temperance Brennan novels and the Bones tv series, only on the big screen. Might actually work better with original stories, as many thrillers adapted from novels just don't work (that means you, Da Vinci Code, most of the Grisham output, etc).

I know it's a bit naive of me, but I always imagined Scarpetta having Cornwell's looks, and that's quite far from Jolie!

Now, I really really like Angelina and I think she is truly a terrific actress, and on the other hand I have read every single Scarpetta novel published thus far and am a huge fan, but the two do not strike me as made for each other.

This said, I'll wait and see what Angelina Jolie can pull off. :)

I agree - I've often thought of Cornwell when picturing Scarpetta. Jolie is a woman of impressive talent, though. I'm sure it will be interesting.
