I would like to have friends, how does one accomplish this?

Well you already nixed bars, so I'm out of ideas. :p
Are there bars especially for sci fi geeks? If there were I'd be drunkle in one now...

Why not then? Goths have their own bars. I won't even sleep with Goths, they get makeup all over everything and they don't bathe often enough.

So there's an idea. Start up your own bar, with a sci fi theme, have sci fi movies playing on the tube over the bar, have Star Trek trivia nights, free shooters for the best costume, etc. Call it "Risa" or some such. Hire cute women as servers and give them pink wigs and silver costumes like the women on Gerry Anderson's 'UFO'. Refinish the walls in metal so it looks like the inside of a Klingon ship. Have separate areas with blast doors. A coin operated R2 unit that comes up and dispenses drinks.

You'll make a fortune, and have your choice of sci fi geek friends, and probably get laid.

More likely he'd go bankrupt ;)

According to Wikipedia, Boone, NC has a population of just under 15,000. I'd love to be wrong, but it's hard to imagine a Star Trek bar thriving in a one horse town like that ;)

Anyhow, the volunteer work thing sounds like a good idea. Or maybe join a gym - if you're home all day, it'd be good to both get out of the house and get some good exercise. The gym I work at has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere and makes lots of opportunities for members to get to know each other socially. Maybe find something like that?

Hello, live in NC, and I think I'm the closest one here to Brent; but I may be wrong. (I'm in Winston-Salem). Anyhoo, Boone is growing from what I hear, and it's home to Appalachian State University. It's surprisingly progressive, rather like Asheville, and it's attracting more and more folks as guests...so, yes, the RESIDENT population is small, but the overall population is larger.

Brent, sorry I didn't get w/you abt. meeting up for BSG's finale, I got the flu and a corneal edema. I watched it out of one eye, w/o contacts, and blurry. Well, the repeat the following week was much clearer. I have a buddy from South Florida that's just moved to Boone. Maybe we could get together and see the next Trek movie up in Boone next month if I could arrange to stay w/him.

Use "the google" to find any organizations in your area that might be of interest to you (like sci-fi clubs and whatnot). Also try meetup.com. Meetup.com has groups for everything (though the selection may not be the greatest if you don't live near a major metro area).

If they had a Star Trek bar, Boone would have a million people living there in no time. Rich people. Beautiful people. Geeky people. Rich beautiful geeky people.

So, last August I moved out of state, I am 1,000 miles away from where I was, in a new town, and I know no one. Now, typically people meet friends through work, unfortunately, I work my job from home, so I am home all day working and thus don't have a job to meet people at. I'm not really a social person, don't go to bars, or clubs etc... So how might a person like me actually meet people and make friends, and find people that are interested in things like me like SCIFI and such locally?

Do volunteer work.

When I moved to Seattle (from San Diego) I knew only a few people. While I have my in-laws here, it is not the same things as friends. I met some great people through going to event through Meetup.com. Now the sci-fi, geek friends I met were not through a Trek meetup or something like that, it was through sailing club meetups or a couple's meetup. You meet a lot of people and I have found that the sci-fi people tend to gravitate to each other. During normal conversation, I may mention comic books, moves etc and them you can start to see who has the same interests. Since you said you were not that social, the acitivity based meetup might be best to meet people. My .02

You could try Adult Education. Pick something you want to learn and find a night school. That was you might meet like minded people too.

I was going to suggest checking out Trinoc*Con, the annual science fiction convention in Raleigh, but it seems they've gone under. :(

However, Raleigh is bidding for the 2010 NaSFiC - the North American Science Fiction Convention, which is held whenever the Worldcon is outside of North America. (In 2010 it will be in Melbourne.) You could always try getting involved with the bid. But be careful - that's how I ended up running ten departments and having about the same number reporting to me at the 2003 Worldcon. ;)

I want to thank you for mentioning meetup.com! I had never heard of them, and now I've found some groups that are worthwhile for me! Thanks!

omg

my life's mission, it has become clear

I find places of worship a good place to meet people.

Well we've ruled out bars, so strip clubs are probably out too.

hahahaha

you have just defined my type in a nutshell
