OMG IF YOU DON'T FWD THIS 200 PEOPLE WILL DIE. OMG. A GIRL WITH GLOWING RED EYES WILL VISIT YOU IN YOUR SLEEP. OMG.

What I remember about lurking in IMDB is that all actors are gay and all actresses need to get naked in order to win Oscars.

Never been to the first two sites mentioned, but I've had personal experience with the kind of horrible trash you'll find on youtube. My most popular video attracted many flamers who enjoyed reminding me of how incredibly overweight and ugly I am.

(PS: I don't think I'm that ugly.)

I don't really pay much attention to the comments at any of these places-- I haven't even visited AICN in months-- but I used to be amazed at how stupid the Posts at IMDB were. This Thread makes it sound like YouTube is far worse, though.

I don't look at the others listed, but the Youtube comments are kind of a bummer.

I've been looking up lots of old Western TV shows themes lately, stuff like Branded, the Rifleman, etc.
I enjoy reading the comments and seeing what people remember about these old shows.

Unfortunately on half of them somebody comes on and starts talking about how the show is evil or unrealistic for it's portrayal of Indians, then a bunch of people come in and start arguing with them and it turns into a typical right/left argument, one side screaming "dirty hippie" the other side screaming "intolerant redneck"...

It made me realize how much this garbage has invaded every aspect of our society, to the point that people are arguing politics in the youtube comments section of an old western tv theme..:(

It's what the internet does -- brings out the worst in anonymous people who would otherwise be quiet as a mouse if everyone on said forum were in the same room together.

I do wonder how much the Internet has contributed to all this repulsive extremism we see everywhere.

Yeah, but does it increase the amount of extremism in a significant way itself, or simply give already preexisting extremists a forum to air their nuttery that wasn't easily available to them before?

I'm sure plenty of weirdos had their own manifestos written up before, the internet simply gave them the means to make their message, such as it is, worldwide.

I suppose as a result of that you should expect to see more of the easily manipulated fall under the sway of their arguments, so I guess in that way it probably has increased the amount of extremism to some degree.

In regards to politics, I just think it gives a certain type of person a voice in which they will suffer no ill consequences for expressing. Add into that the fact that trolling has become a cultural phenomenon (admittedly the most lame of such phenomenon I've ever witnessed), and this is what you end up with.

Believe me, when I started playing World of Warcraft going from these forums to those was like night and day. Un-moderated message boards and comment sections are nothing more than an invitation for people to treat other people like shit.

Never go on AICN (nevermind its posters, the website itself is terrible), and yes IMDB has some awful comments, but Youtube springs to mind
Literally every single clip from The Office UK has some 50 page backwards and forwards of people saying-
"The American version of this is way better you English bastards!"
"No you fucking cunt! The American version is shit!"
etc etc, on and on

Albeit with worse spelling, awful. For the record I like both

But a lot of the comments I see for other stuff are ok more or less. So I'm gonna vote for IMDB, as the FAQ and user comments parts are usually 99% retarded

Yeah, that could be it. It seems like all the middle-of-the-road people are disappearing, being sucked into one black hole or another.

Yeah, the "no ill consequences" is a big part of it, I think. A lot of people feel oppressed by the pressure to be polite and considerate in real life. Not that a lot of them are...

Well, that can go both ways. I belong to a couple of small Forums that are essentially unmoderated-- we have Mods, me among them, but we don't really have to do anything-- and everybody is wonderful to each other.

In terms of trolling or just plain wanting to pis people off, IM DB wins.

In terms of barely being able to type a coherent setence in English, YouTube.

AICN boards I am not familiar with.

YouTube and IMDB are pretty bad but I'm going to give the award to AICN for not only its never ending supply of assholes but because the site is pretty insidious in the way it turns you into one.

I occasionally post in AICN talkbacks and when I read what I posted it always seems filled with more vitriol and sarcasm than I intended when I posted it. AICN wins because it makes people assholes somehow.
