Haven't seen one in a newspaper before and this won't turn up at Rotten Tomatoes, so I hope it's worth a thread.
From today's Sunday Herald Sun (most-read Sunday paper in Victoria)
Headline: "Trek's Star Remake"
4 1/2 stars out of 5
Select quotes:
"The first true blockbuster of 2009"
""...boldly goes where none of its predecessors dared - the profitable universe of mainstream audiences.
"...isn't only made for those who learn Shakespeare in Klingon."
"...never forgets that popcorn flicks are meant to be glorious fun."
"...Abrams - the new Steven Spielberg."
"Laced with deprecating humour and inventive ways to explain Star Trek history, Abrams's introductory course walks the appealing line of respect and niggling."
"Having been on the fringes of A-list stardom, Pine writes his ticket as a major player..."
"...Quinto's exceptional re-incarnation of Leonard Nimoy is the best example of the cast's ability to forge their own identity, while echoing the past."
The only negative comment is describing Scotty as "hammy", though the reference to Kirk being a "former delinquent" seems a bit revisionist.
It should be seen by a lot of people with little to no interest in Trek, who would not normally take a look at online reviews.
For reference, First Contact got four stars, Insurrection 3 and Nemesis 2 in this paper, but none had the emphasis on a mainstream audience (or advance publicity).
