180 Degree Turnaround re: NuEnterpise (Review of Playmates ship)

So because I'm a compulsive when it comes down to all things Trek and because there are no plans in the works for a model kit of the NuEnterprise, I grabbed the Playmates Ship up at Wal Mart yesterday.

I opened it tonight expecting to be disappointed as I usually am by Playmates and because I HATE the NuEnterpise.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I absolutely love it. This is by far the best ship Playmates has ever made and the prototype pics and box pics don't do it justice.

Aside from the fact that it's a really good offering from Playmates, the ship looks great and what I've hated and merely tolerated I now really like. I'm not saying that I wouldn't have gone another way (something in between NX-01 and TOS) but I really love this design, now (I know, blasphemy).

Forgetting all my prior complaints about it the one thing that is bugging me just a little bit (and you don't notice until you see it up close) is that the nacelles seem a little too close together for my taste.

Here is my review of the toy itself.

Cons: First, the lights and sounds are lame. I don't like it when they talk and these do. The lights themselves are all timed together and it's basically like someone's sticking a flashlight in the aft end and flickering it (also, a lot of light leakage). There could be a lot less seams on this thing as well and there is only a simple two-tone paint scheme with no aztecking.

Pros: Small and very solid. Looks to be about 1:750 scale. No decals, hull markings are printed on. Seems very detailed (I don't have a whole lot of closeups of the CGI model yet to make a better assessment than this) for a Playmates ship. I like the style and engineering of the stand.

Notes: Other than the nacelles being close together I also noticed something I had never seen befroe: the saucer section is at a slight up angle. Also, even though it seems similar to the refit saucer, the edges re rounded like the TOS version.

Summary: Despite the issues I pointed out ealier (which most are simply inherent to the nature of it being a toy) I really like this product and the NuEnterprise which is somethingI never thought iwould hear myself say. This would make a great addition to any collection and it IS a ship worthy of the name Enterprise. :techman:

Blasphemy! Burn him!

No, no. I'm joking. :D

I completely agree with you, I didn't like the NuEnterprise, and was very skeptical about it, but after watching it in action through the trailers, and the more and more I thought about it. It really is an awesome looking ship.

I'm going to make a little movie tomorrow of the new ship and post it up on the YouTube and linky it her so everyone can see how nice this damned thing (that I previously called an abomination) is.

Brilliant! I don't think the toy is being sold in England yet, I might be wrong. Just with outlets like Woolworths where I would first go to get any Trek merchandise has closed down.

I guess I could try Toys R' Us.

Toys R Us has them and I don't know if you'e got Wal Mart but they have them.

DON'T BUY IT OFF OF EBAY!

Some of these jokers are selling it for $85 when it's available everywhere for $30 retail.

you know i have to agree with you. i also hated the design but when i saw the playmates version i must admit i like it! talk about a 180. though i still think the motion picture enterprise is the best design. im curious to see how the nacelles will vector in the movie. that should be interesting.;)

Yeah... I don't think anything will ever be as sexy as the refit, either. ;)

I mostly agree with your review. I wish they had gone the Art Asylum way and found a way to hide the screws, but just sitting on display you don't even notice them since they are on the bottom. The only seam that sort of bugs me, from up close, is on the edge of the saucer. Again, I wish they would have made it one piece like the refit Enterprise AA made. As for the light bleed, I haven't even bothered to buy batteries for it because, aside from showing off the lights to people here and there, I don't like the sounds and it's just going to sit on display next to other ships anyway.

However, this is way, way better than the Playmates 1701-D and in a completely different class than Playmates' 1701-E. Does anyone remember the E Playmates made from First Contact? It looked almost nothing like the actual ship in the film, at all.

I totally agree and the reason it's not as good as ArtAsylum is production costs. It would be $50 retail if they cleaned it up more I'm sure. I'm not saying I like it, I'm just saying I get it.

Not to take too much of a dump onthe Enterprise E but he reason this happened is that as far as I know Playmates made the toy based off the original design sketches way in advance of the final design. That's why the Insurrection version actually looks correct.

It's not the first time that Playmates has jumped the gun. The Star Trek Generations have our heroes all wearing uniforms that came from the original design sketches and there's a Kirk wearing an a spacesuit something and he looks like he's wrapped in tinfoil (from a deleted scene).

Indeed, it would have set the price point into "collector" territory versus "toy" territory and quality wise I think we got a nice in-between.

Very true, I've heard that before somewhere. But I never managed to get a good E-E until AA's version.

An alright looking toy. I think I will get one and take out the sound stuff, and make it so the lights are always on. Should be an easy re-wire.

Thanks for the video. This new enterprise, well, it really does look fantastic.

The taper of the nacelles, their closer spacing and the taper under the hanger deck remind me of the same areas of the -E. There are also round devices on top of both ship's nacelles at both ends. It's like the Trek X Constitution class designers read Cochran's notes from seeing the -E through the telescope in "First Contact"! The Trek X ship has hemispherical bussards (like the Phoenix and NX-01) and has the longer edge of the shrouds on top (the -E is longer at the bottom edge).

The events in First Contact may have resulted in some nacelle technology and hull geometry being invented earlier. I wonder if this new time line will have the warp propulsion subspace damage problems that were discovered during the "...Next Generation".

I noticed details on the side of the secondary hull and the sides of the dorsal near where the refit had docking ports. The details on the dorsal are hexagonal instead of round. I don't see any sign of a docking port or gangway port on either side of the main hull or the aft edge of the bridge's deck.

There's a protrusion on the dorsal near where the refit had the photon torpedo room. The hexagonal "docking port" looks like it's on a higher deck though.
