Will there be another? The Navy has taken to naming its carriers after Presidents (next up is the Gerald Ford).

The WWII Enterprise, the most decorated ship in US Naval history (along with the USS Constitution) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(CV-6)

USN Wants To Retire Carriers Early

April 15, 2009: The U.S. Navy wants to decommission its oldest aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) three years early, in 2012. Originally, the Enterprise was going to stay in service until the USS Ford entered service in 2015. But changes in aircraft weaponry, namely smart bombs and targeting pods, have reduced the need for eleven carriers. The navy believes ten will get the job done. Plus, the Enterprise, as the world's first nuclear powered carrier, will also be the first to be decommissioned.

Damn Berman and Braga. They fucked this up somehow.

First off, what exactly does this have to do with the new Star Trek film?

Also, I highly doubt this will be the last time a Naval vessel will use the name Enterprise. It's a popular, prestigious name used in both the English and US navies, it's not going away.

Before that, though, they totally have to take the CVN-65 to the Genesis Planet.

I saw a special on the new carriers on the military channel, and Enterprise is one of the names under consideration for the next generation carrier.

The Navy seems intent on reducing its capabilities for reasons only they can understand. Hopefully they can turn the Big E into a museum ship somehow, so it doesn't meet the same fate as its predecessor. It really is a shame that the CV-6 couldn't be saved after all she went through in the Pacific war. :(

They are actually just going to remake it under the name CV-65, but this time it will look cooler so that it appeals to younger servicemen. It will also have more moving parts.

The name enterprise will continue, we dont need a bunch of nerdy sci-fi fans asking for a multibillion $ ship to be named 'Enterprise"

Those "...Bunch of Nerdy Sci-Fi Fans..." (including myself) got NASA to name the first Test Shuttle ENTERPRISE...

Enterprise was famous well before Star Trek for her duty in the Pacific fleet as well as being one of the ships sent to Tripoli during President Jefferson's time. Also, there are rumors floating around that one of the Ford-class carriers will be named Enterprise.

I agree. Let history never forget the name Enterprise. I don't think our military will ever completely remove the name Enterprise from our Navy. It has so much more history than just Star Trek.

Uh, you know there was a pretty famous carrier named Enterprise in WWII, right? That'd be the one the first nuclear-powered carrier is named after and the one a new carrier would be named after. If I write in it will be to make sure the USN always has a ship named after the Big E, or The Grey Ghost, as the Japanese called her.

To be fair...that thing was mostly plywood and Papier-mâché.

Will the next-gen Enterprise be CVN-65-A?
If not, I'm boycotting Naval Warfare.

Other than the familiar name of the ship in question, not a thing.

Since this is about the decommissioning event, rather than about any explicitly Science&Tech-y aspect, it would appear Miscellaneous is the place for the thread to be, so moving it there now...

A lack of such retarded naming conventions is why the Royal Navy will forever be superior to the US Navy.

The Royal Navy is, to my knowledge, the world's most kickass when it comes to naming ships. HMS Invincible? HMS Iron Duke? HMS Vengeance? HMS Smiter? Seriously, those are all awesome, and that's just a smattering of names from the list I found on Wiki.

Uh oh. Will this ship's last captain steal the Enterprise to find his long-lost first officer and best friend who vanished in the Bermuda Triangle?

I kind of like it. It gives a sense of organization and class.

But yeah, Royal Navy ship names beat the snot out of US Navy ship names. We name our ships after cities, states, and presidents (for the most part. Bo-ring.
