Who is Richard?

I think Richard is going to be key to the Temple and the past civilisation. I don't think he's from the Black Rock; but I do think that was a lost opportunity to not have a time travel travel sequence that stumbled upon them after they were washed up the tsunami or whatever.
The thought has occurred to me that this could be Atlantis.

I'd wondered before if he was somehow time-travelling, having seen him at various points throughout the island's history. Didn't he visit a young Locke at some point? Yes I realise there was a submarine, but maybe he's turned the wheel at some point also.
Ancient Eygyptian? I could go with that. Maybe he built the statue?
Honestly though, despite theories, I generally have no idea. He's just sort of always there, which is creepily cool.

Twice. Once when Locke was born and then again a few years later. When older Locke met Richard in the 1950s he told Richard when and where he would be born and told him to visit the hospital himself if he didn't believe it.
Later Richard visited young Locke and showed him several items, one of which was the compass older Locke had given him.

And how come we don't see Tom around when Ben is pushing Claire on the swing? Or when young Ben is brought to Richard?
Exactly. I think all the true island natives are probably ageless. They're also the whisperers. They possess some sort of telepathic communication which we can hear as whispers in the air.
I would say most of the the Others are like Ben and Juliette, they weren't born on the island. Damon Lindlof said in one of the DVD commentaries that it should be clear the island possessed an indiginous population, but that it was sort of like the United States, a land of immigrants who all say they're American but whose ancestors came from somewhere else like Europe. I'm guessing most Others are from off-island, but there are still a few whispering natives like Richard.
That would explain the eyeliner since everyone, men and women, wore it in ancient Egypt.
But to be honest, I've given up figuring out Richard. The best I can think of is that he's kinda like Ultra Magnus or Riker: Someone who has all the skill and know how to lead the Others, but chose to remain more of a field operator to be close to them as opposed to running things from an office like Ben liked to do.
Or maybe, he was in line to lead the Others, but broke one of their mysterious Rules. Instead of banishment or death, Smokey or Jacob considered him too valuable a resource and and has him in some sort of flow chart purgatory, still in a command position, but not a real big decision maker.
Any o' this make sense?
Kinda like the deal Ben had to make with Smokey/Alex? After Locke is dead and gone and another is there to take his place, will Smokey make Ben swear allegience to whoever the next leader is ...
I have such a hard time believing that that is not eyeliner. He claims to wear no eye makeup and that it is natural. But I'm sorry, people aren't just born with dark black lines around their eyes. I think he had it permanently tattooed on!

Richard, to me, is one of the biggest mysteries related to the Island. I REALLY want to know what's up with him.
On Lostepedia I think I remembered checking the profiles the other day and he has less than 20 episodes (16 or 18, maybe? something in that ballpark). And yet, I'm always hopeful he's gonna be in the next episode, because I'm always hoping they will give us another piece to his puzzle.
Definitely the most intriguing of the non-regular characters on the show...at least for me.

I doubt the Island is letting John go that easily. He's definitely a keeper in its eyes. The way I see it, in the last 50 years or so, or even longer, there's been a lack of true leadership for the Others and the ones who have been in some leadership position, Widmore, Ben, etc, have never had the island's, or its people's, best interest in mind. In Locke, they've found someone who is a selfless strong leader. Which is why it went through the extraordinary circumstances to restore him to life (Christian, I think, is a mere shell being used by the Island to communicate through with just the faintest traces of the real Christian in there).
After watching the last episode, I'm more confused about Richard than ever. Sometimes he seems like the guy who has all the answers, that the key to all the mysteries is to be found with him. Other times, like in the last episode, he seems as much in the dark as we are.
