The advertising is starting to piss me off

]Me neither. But they can do that without insulting fans of the original.

If it means Trek is succesful then screw every TOS fan :p I don't care if it drives you all away and if it means get rid of the old to bring in the new...

MAKE IT SO

That doesn't give them the right to treat us like shit.

Come on, don't you think you're being a little small about this?

No.

I don't see anything wrong with them trying to advertise their movie as hip, modern and fun.

Speaking as a fan of the original, I'm not feeling the least bit insulted by it, and I have no intention of going out of my way to look for other things by which to be insulted, least of all television commercials on channels I don't even watch, targeted to attract an audience not usually found watching Star Trek.

Post Of The Month.

There was a tidbit over at Trekmovie.com today about these Cobrasnake Trek dance parties, accompanied by a picture of a couple of chicks in bikinis who were painted green - you know, in the club as part of the promotion.

Somebody actually wasted part of their life posting a complaint about how the "Orion makeup is so bad."

There must be medication for that state of mind.

I hereby consider myself drubbed and schooled.

I just had a knee jerk reaction to the "not your father's" line. I actually yelled "Well fuck you!" at the TV when I saw it... but I do get what they're going for and recognize the importance of doing so.

Still, it did make me feel a bit old and unloved. I'm sure the film itself will leave me feeling differently.

Dale, the very fact that they're BRINGING BACK TOS is a paean to us.

That doesn't give them the right to treat us like shit.

The answer is simple.

Don't go.

Don't give them your money.

Don't reward them for slapping you in the face.

Don't like up like a good little lemming whose number has just been called.

Don't let the bastards win.

DON'T FUCKING GO.

Otherwise, you deserve every insult they hurl and they'll continue to churn out crap.

QED.

Some of the responses here are rather amusing. What I see here is that some people are jumping in front of an imaginary gun and allowing themselves to be wounded by imaginary bullets.

To translate, some people are allowing themselves to be "insulted" where no insult exists.

Good gawds, lighten up, Bobby.

Really. People go out of their way to find something to be affronted by.

Y'know, here's something funny: because of the amount of mainstream publicity, the praise that's being heaped on it by reviewers, and the fact that several of the actors are in early career upswings and will be around for qute a while, even if this movie bombs it's going to be the first thing most non-trekkies think of when the words "Star Trek" come up for many years to come.

I hereby disassociate myself from this line of thinking.

Yep, there's a tendency among the 5% of Trek fans who are really opposed to this movie to mistranslate any criticism of it whatever into opposition to the whole project. It's a transparent and simplistic "got 'em coming and going" rhetorical strategy - if one isn't 100% uncritical of the project it reveals "real problems for Abrams and his movie" but if simply likes and expresses enthusiasm for what they see of it they're "sheeple".

Well, you said you were just galled by it. I'd stick by that. It was a valid reaction. As I've posted above, that was my feeling, too. It lasted about ten minutes. But I do still think it was kind of a strange way to promote the movie. Is the image of TOS really that bad? Am I going to have to rethink going to the movie in my command gold TOS tunic with my sideburns shaved into the Trek shape?

Let me be clear, I'm definitely not (and never was) opposed to this movie. I think it'll be great. Probably will be my favorite out of all of them. And TOS never was my favorite Trek series, either.

I can love this movie and yet not like that one line in the ad.

Oh, I wasn't lumping you into the 5%.

Sort of by definition, almost no one is in that group. One out of twenty, right? Given the historical turn out among the hard core for oldTrek movies, and assuming that they'd pay full ticket price if they did go, then their proposed boycott will cost this movie about two million dollars.

I saw the new trailer on American Idol last night. and, yes, I was watching AI. ;)
I saw it, too!

this has to be a joke...

look that was one ad placed on specific shows as a touch of niche targeted marketing.

yeah they hate the tos fans.. cant you just see the hate with having nimoy in austin presenting the film to fans before the big fancy shindig.

as i said we fans had had our trailer.
1) Trekkies will put their butts in the seats.
2) Trekkies will not be enough to make this film a success
3) Getting NEW butts in the seats means more Trek for everyone
4) "This is not your father's Star Trek" will get NEW butts in the seats
GO FOR IT!! (Make it so!--for the old farts :guffaw:)

My friendship with George Takei started over a comment I made to him about how TFF was poorly marketed. It is a topic we discussed for years. I am so loving that Paramount has marketed this movie better than any other Star Trek product! It has been a long time coming!
