The advertising is starting to piss me off

What would an ad aimed at the 40-50 y/o crowd like?

Pine talking into his armrest saying "SCOTTY! I need.......warp power. How....much longer?"

Or maybe showing a big blurry image of President Obama sitting in his chair in the middle of space on the view screen?

Or a big action scene with the entire cast on the bridge leaning violently and in unison to the left. And then to right.

You kind of make the point. The all too popular image of TOS as campy. Certainly it had its share, intended or not. But the thing is, without the long-time support of the (now) 40-50 y/o crowd, Abrams wouldn't be doing this movie. So, why an ad campaign that evokes feelings of being old and thrown under the bus?

I don't want Trek stuck in the past, but as someone who was there at the start, there is something insulting at a core level in the tone of a "Not your father's Star Trek," campaign. Especially since TOS fandom probably HAS been passed down to quite a few from their fathers (and mothers).

I don't know. Yeah, it's just an ad. But, all I can say is that the point probably could've been made with a tad more sensitivity. I don't know, maybe I'm just feeling vulnerable, today. Perhaps I should relax with a cup of tea. Or a shot of bourbon.


Just having some fun. I'm 46 and watched Star Trek with Dad. TOS had it's share of camp but it also had an equal amount of poignant story lines. I tend to agree that the powers that be are over hyping the action aspect of the film (long missing in many of the films IMO) and forgoing the ensemble cast interplay.

Cool. (And, welcome to the old fart fans club, I'm, 48.) I wasn't bashing what you said, anyway, mainly because as I said, you made a good point. As you say, too, TOS often had poignancy, something this movie apparently does not have. I just don't know how one can say, "This is not your father's Trek," on the one hand, and, "I hope I captured the essence of what Roddenberry's Trek was," on the other. We'll see.

I guess another point I'd make is I don't remember anyone restarting any of the other trans-generational franchises like Batman, Superman, Spiderman, James Bond, or MI using an that so bluntly tried to disassociate the new from what went before it.
 
That's funny. Before there wasn't enough advertising and now there are complaints of too much advertising. Could it be because we are near May, 8, 2009? :)

Still, you don't think that's an odd part of the campaign? A left-handed slap at the older fans? Overcompensating over Trek's stereotyped image, maybe? Why not continue with:
-- Not your chess club's Star Trek.
-- Not your basement dwelling momma's boy's Star Trek.
-- This will be your girlfriend's Star Trek.
-- Got a life? This Trek's for you.
-- Not your constume-wearing Star Trek.
-- Star Trek: less geeky, more cheeky.
-- Star Trek: call it Star Track if you want.

Just sayin'. ;)

I noticed something interesting last night. I was watching the latest eps of big bang theory, and there was one of the trek adds...

but not the "not your fathers..." add, but the "Prepare for a new beginning..." one Seen here.

So, they are being careful where they put the "not your fathers..." one.
 
Well of course this isn't your father's Star Trek! Since it's coming out in 2009, he couldn't have watched it in the past!

I mean they're really trying to make it clear to the kids that the new movie's not more of the stale old shit they've been showing on UPN more than a decade.

I don't see anything wrong with them trying to advertise their movie as hip, modern and fun. When was the last time there was a Trek movie that was any of those things? Over a decade.

Personally I find the advertising refreshing. At 33 I'm older than they're advertising to by a good eight or more years and I don't feel in the least bit put down by what they're doing.

They'd be stupid not to advertise the movie this way. It's the kids that are gonna make the movie a hit. Not the geezers.

I think the problem is too many people come to this forum and read all the spoilers and new clips that pop out, and then see all the TV Spots and trailors added-on to movies in the theatres. Then they think, "Whoa, that's too much advertising!"

I don't think it is. I think the problem is there is a lot of different types of media to advertise now. For one: The Internet. Back in the day when I was growing up it was just trailers seen on TV if you were lucky enough, or by word of mouth and maybe an occasional mention of it on the radio. Nowadays from what I've seen here is people get online, see all the stuff they can, and watch all the tv spots they can and stuff at that nature. Not saying it's a bad thing to do, but I think that's where the "too much advertising" lies in.

Which is why I avoided the forum as much as I did so I wouldn't be too spoiled :) Yes, I did look at a few of the trailers when they popped online and saw the clip with Simon Pegg as Scotty. But that's about all I saw, and a few tv spots so I'm more excited about the film instead of worrying about too much advertisement :)

look that was one ad placed on specific shows as a touch of niche targeted marketing.

yeah they hate the tos fans.. cant you just see the hate with having nimoy in austin presenting the film to fans before the big fancy shindig.

as i said we fans had had our trailer.
