This will allow a lot more of my friends to come along with, as a few wouldn't be able to do the 12 am showing for work/school/etc. Awesome news!

This is pretty clearly intended to run up the "first weekend" totals as high as possible. A number of films have done this in the last couple of years.

For me the big question is will the theater in Sedona, AZ be included in this? I'll be on vacation there...if not, it's (hopefully) an IMAX in Phoenix on the 8th.
Shows a May 8 opening for Sedona here, but that may not yet reflect a recently-added advance showing. Might be worth trying to contact the theaters or finding a website for them.
The sooner the better, obviously, but I'll miss the "midnight movie" vibe. A midnight crowd is always so single-minded whereas a 7pm crowd is likely to include the merely curious, the painfully ignorant, the young constant-texters, people with noisy kids, etc.

But this will give my son and I a chance to go at 7 p.m. if it is showing at the cineplex here on that day, because he has school the next day and thus would've had to wait until Saturday.
And why not, as Dennis said, try and run up the score...? That'll increase the chances for a prequel sequel.

BTW, every "midnight premiere" I've attended for a big-budget flick like this - say, last year's "Casino Royale" - has been packed with every kind of person, not just afficianados. Midnight showings like this are not the current equivalent of the old "Rocky Horror Picture Show" things. They are aimed partly at creating the excitement of "first to see it" which attracts all sorts of folks but particularly young ones.

They did this for Generations in 1994. It was a 7:00 PM showing that Thursday night and the place was packed, but it seemed like mostly Star Trek fans. It was neat to be in a full theater of people who picked up on things only Trek fans would, but some of the laughter and clapping was kind of annoying and you don't know if you missed things until you saw it again.
For instance, during the first showing of Star Trek IV, the audience went nuts when they showed the Enterprise-A for the first time. I never even knew Kirk said, "my friends, we've come home" until I saw the movie for a second time with a less-enthusiastic audience. The same thing happened in Star Trek III when McCoy said, "that green-blooded son of a bitch." Nobody in the theater heard him then say, "it's his revenge for all those arguments he lost."
Still, I think there's something special about seeing the first showing of a Star Trek movie in my area. For Nemesis, it was 11:00 AM on Friday and there was maybe 30 people. I assume there may be a tad more for this one.

Actually, a 10 am showing in Sedona (as shown at your link) might work for me, if I'm all packed and ready to check out of my hotel by 9. I'd have plenty of time after the movie to drive down to Phoenix for the baseball game I plan to attend that night. Thanks!
Cool. I think I will check around to see if any of my local theaters will be showing early. I still may end up going as early as I can on May 8th though.
