Just finished "Warpath" -- clarification on the ending

Spoilers about Warpath. Please avoid spoilers in novels taking place after Warpath---

First of all, loved every second of Warpath. One of my favorites in the entire series (starting with Olympus Descending). I dare say, however, that I'm a bit confused by all the "Kiras," but I'll take a stab at it.

  • We have the real Kira. She was attacked by Taran'atar and spends most of the book with the prophets-- the sidestory with Sulan and the Ascendants in a historical/symbolic/prophetic dream-like vision.
  • Intendant Kira of the alternate universe, who we were led to believe was behind Taran'atar's "reprogramming," is killed in the end by a Kira look-alike.
  • Iliana Ghemor, a dangerous killer who underwent a radical transformation to look like Kira Nerys and was responsible Taran'atar's enslavement. AND:
  • Iliana Ghemor (again) or "The Cardassian Woman" who apparently has Kira's features (sans being Cardassian) and spends the entire book being hunted by several different bounty hunters. It turns out she's a "good guy."
Is this basically where I'm at? I'm starting "Fearful Symmetry" tomorrow so I want to have my facts straight :). Also it appears Iliana Ghemor is already established in canon... I'll need to rewatch that episode (it's been quite awhile).

That's about right, though you forgot to note that "Iliana Ghemor (again)" is the one from the Mirror Universe, and don't worry about too many spoilers, none of us will know much of anything until the Soul Key comes out and then hopefully some more of our questions will be answered.

Warpath is an amazing book but the kicker with it is that so many of the important things going on happen "off screen"

And just to reinterate- she is therefore Cardassian. It's telling at the start I think that the Klingon recognizes her eyes.

This is one of my favourite DS9PF books. I think FS is set a week after the end of Warpath.

Don't forget that 'Fearful Symmetry' is out, which continues the story a bit. It also explains a lot of our universe's Iliana's backstory.

To my mind, there are five Kiras in Warpath, although you have it mostly right.

1 - Captain Kira Nerys of Starfleet, aka RU Kira, who spends the majority of the book in a coma or a Prophet vision.

2 - General Kira Nerys of the Bajora, the role RU Kira plays in the Prophets' vision.

3 - Intendant Kira Nerys of the K-C Alliance, aka MU Kira, whom both she and we are led to believe is in control of Taran'atar, even though she's actually not.

4 - RU Iliana Ghemor, a Cardassian ex-Obsidian Order agent who was surgically altered to appear to be RU Kira for an OO operation, but was never activated. She is the one actually in control of Taran'atar, and apparently still believes she actually is RU Kira.

5 - MU Iliana Ghemor, aka the "Cardassian Woman," a rebel agent who was trying to interfere with RU Iliana's plans, and who spent most of the book fighting off assassins sent by RU Iliana. How she actually knew what RU Iliana's plans were will be explored in Fearful Symmetry.

Sorry, this thread just reminded me of something:

You know, other than just a few MAJOR details, I've pretty much forgotten all the events of the last 10+ DS9 novels...

The breaks didn't really help in that regard. I guess I'll have to reread everything post Unity before the Soul Key comes out.

Oh well, used to be that DS9 was my favorite novel series, but now I have Vanguard & Klingon Empire, so all is well.

I think you mean it will be explored in The Soul Key, since precious little in this regard was really explored in Fearful Symmetry.

I've been reading them off and on for about a year now. I still need to go back and read "The Left Hand of Destiny" and "A Stitch in Time" after I finish "Fearful Symmetry" (started this morning). That should keep me busy until the Soul Key is released.

Edit: Just preordered the Soul Key!

Well, alright, perhaps "explored" was overstating it. But it's certainly stated in FS.

Also, an ironic comment considering your signature...

Aren't one and two technically the same? One's a dream to prepare her for what #1 will do, but really it's the same person... everyone else matches up too. Hee hee, even the runabouts!

LHD has very little impact on the DS9 Relaunch. Same goes for ASiT, which is more of a backstory on Garak.

Ha! I totally, know! I turn into such a geeky smarmy when it comes to this stuff! ;)

I'm really deplorable in polite company anyways and I always get into absolute trouble in the company of fellow geeks; those magic times when I can really lay into my "profound" theories about the Borg Collective-this or the impact of Trek characters as modern mythology-that and add a little alcohol into the mix and the geekdom really starts flying. Allamaraine, baby!

Never hesitate to tell me to tone it down if I'm being too much of a geeky d-bag though. The trek fanaticism sometimes knows no bounds. But hey, everybody's gotta have a passion right? At least you can be glad when you belong to fandom blessed with crazy recognition manifesting in infinite combonations. We may be odd folk but we're admitted oddfolk and proud of it. :-D

Still, I am looking forward to the Soul Key with baited breath. I'm dying to know how all this crazy shiz is going to go down. Fearful Symmetry was such a tease!

Yeah, but ASiT does introduce the situation on post-DW Cardassia which does play a fairly big role in the rest of the series.

#1 knows she's #2, but #2 doesn't know she's #1...

What do you mean? Isn't #2 just a dream that Kira only partly remembers? So isn't she just #1 undergoing a different event as foreshadowing/warning?

I think I'm starting to see what you mean... I just equate it with her Gateways experience, only... sleepier...

Funny... normally this headache only develops when I'm thinking about time travel...

Actually, I believe the intention was that Bajora General Kira is to our Kira Nerys as Benny Russell was to Ben Sisko.

How's that headache now?

Or if you're dreaming and you're doing something in the dream... it's still you, it's not as separate as Kira/Iliana etc. are...

And... I'll lend DGCatAniSiri something for the headache...
