So is that bad for Parks & Recreation, then? I hope the show continues. I'll take anything in the vein of The Office, and I like the cast.

its a not a great start, but if numbers dont drop too much it should be alright

have to say I love how 30 Rock is now a hit, after Fey spent all that time doing Palain impersonations

That's not bad for Parks & Recreation or Southland, but premiere numbers don't mean much till we see the second episode because that will indicate whether the expected drop off is survivably small or one of those its-only-a-matter-of-time cliff-dives.

Sorry, but I gotta root for the cliff dive. I want Chuck to get renewed and Heroes not to be threatened (a renewal is never any kind of ironclad guarantee) and with Leno hogging up five crucial hours a week now, any success on NBC threatens the shows I like - and the two newbies are hitting above Chuck and Heroes' demos, which me no likee, so diediedie. It's a jungle out there. :D

Over on CBS, Harper's Island is in a whole other realm of competition because CBS is so strong overall. On CBS, the renew/cancel line hits just under CSI: NY's level, which is at 3.3/ 9. So a 2.7/8 is iffy, but on the plus side, CBS is still trying to break out if its stuffy geriatric image with at least one show that attracts a young audience and some online buzz. And being successful, CBS can afford to be generous.

The Office started off with pretty low ratings during the first season but NBC decided to renew it anyway and it became a hit. I imagine that unless Parks and Recreation has a huge drop in ratings it will be renewed.

So was Harper's Island any good? I thought the ads looked interesting but I totally forgot it was on. I'll have to catch it online.

I taped it but I was too busy catching up with Lost and Heroes...there's a thread for it around here somewhere. I'll post in it tomorrow!

As a Chuck fan, this article about Southland makes me very worried!
If "Southland" continues to perform well for the network, Silverman and his team may have to find a place for it on the fall schedule. Yet, with Jay Leno arriving to fill all the 10 p.m. weekday timeslots, the edgy cop drama will have to find a new home.
Because if there's one thing the world needs, it's more frakkin cop shows!!!

^ I wouldn't jump to any conclusions - yet - about Southland or Harper's Island.

My early bet is that Southland will be renewed (NBC is desperate, the show held up at the half hour and didn't get a lot of tune-out) but CBS is in a strong position so Harper's Island won't get to move on to Harper's Cruise Ship or Harper's Creepy Snowed-In Hotel...

I honestly think studio executives should come to this board and ask us whether they should greenlight pilots or not. I can always tell what won't last just by reading synopses.

They could hire me though I would love a go at NBC a real challenge

So can I but sadly, the stuff that I know will last does not correspond very well to the stuff I want to see them greenlight, so I'd just lie to them anyway. :rommie:

I can tell ya what Heroes needs: a sexy dominatrix style villainness to attract the male audience that is fading away because Bryan Fuller's focus on relationship-based drama with only a smattering of action is boring the frak out of them. Not Ali Larter, tho, somebody new.

But once again, this is a great example of what's good for ratings not at all being what I want to see, because I could give a frak about my theoretical dominatrix villainness and I want more Petrellicest. :p

isnt that a job we all want?

It would be interesting to see the results of us messing around playing network suit. Hey, there's a reality show that could work: a network puts five show concepts out there and invites the squabbling masses to its website to vote on alterations to the shows - like, here's a character's name and role, vote on one of five personalities for that person, etc. Then the launch the shows for real (at least a pilot) and see which ones succeed and which ones crash & burn.

If a million people all contribute their ideas to a show - even if the ideas are mostly repeats of what everyone else is saying - that's a million people who feel some proprietary interest in the success of the show. And if there's a million who are angry because their ideas weren't used for the show, they'll still be tuning in, so they can bad-mouth it online later.

The point is: it's a way to get people engaged! What network TV is suffering from is public disinterest.

what on earth makes you think that if any of us were in charge, we would want other people to have a say?

I think Dollhouse has proven that no matter how much blatant T&A and cheesecake you stuff into a series, and have an ad campaign based on the image of a naked woman, the show will still fail.
