PETA - at it again...

Another in the long list of stupid things PETA is concerned about:

PETA has asked the Pet Shop Boys to change the band's name to Rescue Shelter Boys.
The People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA), sent a letter to Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe acknowledging that its request, at first blush, might appear "bizarre."
But, by changing its name, the band could raise awareness at every tour stop of the "cramped, filthy conditions" that breeders keep animals in before selling them to pet stores.

Here is a link to the entire article: http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/10/peta.pet.shop.boys/index.html

What a bunch of idiots.

One thing they did, though, did make me laugh in a good way. They bought one of those bricks (that you can have a message engraved on) at PETCO Park a few years ago. The message they chose was this:

Break Open Your Cold Ones! Toast The Padres! Enjoy This Championship Organization!

Of course it stands for 'Boycott PETCO' but the Padres officials thought that not enough people would get the joke so they left it in. :guffaw:

I boycott pet stores that sell dogs and cats. Petco works with the rescue organizations to adopt out rescued animals, just like petsmart. They don't sell dogs and cats. I don't understand why Peta would boycott them? They do sell birds, maybe that's their problem. But you don't see a lot of stray parrots flying around, so how else would you get one?

I was just reading about this on the BBC site. What a bunch of ridiculous fuckwits. This is even dumber than when they started moaning about Call of Duty: World at War, because of the apparent mistreatment of dogs that the game portrays. Mind you, it doesn't surprise me that these clowns have difficulty seperating fantasy from reality. Idiots.

Heh... that does seem rather silly, even if PETA's heart may be in the right place. For a more interesting take on PETA, to to http://www.i-am-bored.com and search for Penn & Teller's rip on PETA. Rather enlightening, to say the least.

I'd provide a link but all video storage sites like that are blocked here.

Anything good that they try to accomplish is always destroyed by nonsense like this. It makes them lose all credibility.

Yeah, I get kind of upset when someone tells me they bought a cat or a dog from a pet store. Not only because of the conditions of the puppy mills that the animals are aquired from but also because there are so many shelter animals that need happy homes.

I do think that PETA's request is silly though. What they stand for is great but their methods are stupid.

They're not idiots, this type of thing is perfect for getting their name and message out there. It doesn't matter whether or not Pet Shop Boys does what they ask because they get media attention anyway and then people like us talk about and spread it more. Silly idea (name change-wise) but marketing goodness.

My dog was in a puppy mill for six years, for breeding. She was rescued by someone that goes undercover at those places to get evidence of cruelty. They were auctioning the "old" dogs off. If they aren't sold, they're shot. I shudder to think of someone putting a gun in this little girl's face and pulling the trigger with no qualms about it whatsoever.

I highly doubt that any serious organisation would willingly revel in any form of marketing that potrays them as a joke to the rest of the world. It undermines them, and prevents people taking them seriously, as demonstrated by this latest story.

That's because they're not really a serious organization. The ASPCA is a serious organization. Peta is full of nutbags.

The point still stands because I doubt that PETA and its members view themselves as nutbags. To themselves, they are animal rights campaingers who do a serious job and carry a serious message. To the rest of us, they're nutjobs. This totally contradicts rofeta's assertion that "all publicity is good publicity".

That is true. If you're trying to be taking seriously as activists with an agenda, demanding that the Pet shop Boys change their name and asking Judas Priest to change "Hell Bent for Leather" to "Hell Bent For Pleather" just makes you look ridiculous.
Not to mention the huge turn-off of throwing blood on people and just being assholes in general. Yeah, that's going to win people over.

I didn't know the Pet Shop Boys were still around.

As for PETA, they can piss off. If they loved kittens and puppies so much they wouldn't kill most of the animals they take in.

Quoted for truth.

This is stupid, even for PETA.

Well, I want to see all high ranking female PETA ladies squeeze some milk out of their boobs and serve it first.

Those who recall some passed PETA news will understand what I am emntioning here.

PETA and PETCO have a long standing feud, apparently. I don't know why.
